Music that is influenced by Indian music?
Hello,
I'm still new here.
I listen mostly to Jazz but I do love the sound of Indian music very much, so I am wondering what artists of other genres are influenced by Indian music? I of course know The Beatles, but what others? Also, I can't think of any Jazz musicians influenced by Indian music either. Sad. Maybe Hamid Drake though. Thanks.

Not only was Coltrane influenced by Indian Music....he named his son Ravi after Ravi Shankar....and then there is his composition India....which has been covered a good many times....and influenced musicians in multiple genres. The Byrds' Eight Miles High....McGuinn's four-note riff (D-B G-A) is taken from Coltrane's song India. Shankar even taught Coltrane for a bit.
John Mclaughlin was/is influenced by Indian music, as well.
Jugalbandhi is somewhat similar to Jazz.

A bit related to this. I'm not so good with identifying ethnic instruments yet. Like with Hamid Drake I mentioned above, I think he uses Indian percussion, but what kind? I have an album with him and William Parker and I find it hard to determine what he is using. The song "Japeru", for one, I really have no idea what he is playing, or through much of the album Piercing the Veil. So you know, I lost the CD insert so I can't remember if it said something there. Anyway, thanks to anyone who can help.

Hmm. Yes, I didn't think about Coltrane. Thanks! Anyone else? It doesn't need to be Jazz. I wonder if there are any electronic artists!

Oh! I didn't know this. I guess I will just go research Sufi music and see what instruments they use.

Sorry, I didn't realize you were asking what instruments he used.
He generally plays drums, tabla, frame drum, bells.
