Donald Ayler, R.I.P.

I have been informed that DA MAN's (aka Albert Ayler) brother died on Sunday....Oct. 21st. He recently had his 65th birthday.

I really didn't realize he was still alive. His mental condition had a lot to do with his brother's suicide. He pretty much disappeared after recording a few times in the early 80's.

Everything he did with his brother is excellent.

I have never heard of this man. Of course, Albert Ayler, but never that he had a brother or that he was a Jazz musician too. Sad that his death is what would bring him to my attention!

For those that might not have known....there was a documentary about DA MAN, which came out in 2005. It's being screened in several cities throughout the U.S. starting in November.

Sorry, I tend to remember the leader of sessions easily, but it is harder to recall all the players on albums for me. So many in Jazz! So, I had forgotten that he is featured on some of his brother's best! And of course I have Spirits Rejoice.

That's a mistake with Jazz....because many sideman end up becoming leaders in their own right, or record on other excellent recordings. Keeping track of the sideman can lead you to discovering a lot of great recordings.
