We can agree though that he influenced bop, especially earlier on?

Side story:
A student of mine, a 23 year old university kid, is a pianist and a piano teacher. Learning piano in Korea, she was only taught classical styles by her likely hack teachers. Her favourite works are the piano concertos of Mr Brahms. These days, on her own nudging, she has begun studying jazz. So, as teacher extraodinaire, I've begun introducing her to some of my favourite jazz pianists and have thrown in a few Blues/stride pianists for good measure - Tatum, Basie, The King Cole, Allison, Ammons, Evans (as in Bill, but Gil too), Johnson (James P.), Johnson (as in Pete), Brother Ray, The Duke, Slim, Sykes (as in Roosevelt, not so much Forrest), Spann, Pinetop (as in Smith), and of course Monk. I hooked her up with some CDs of all the artists. She came across a video on her own of Monk. She was blown away and now loves Monk - and doesn't have the slightest clue about why Monk's music sounds so good, just as long as it does.
To use a quote by Whitman:
You must not know too much, or be too precise or scientific about birds and trees and flowers and water-craft; a certain free margin, and even vagueness - perhaps ignorance, credulity - helps your enjoyment of these things...

He was there at it's beginnings and he did perform on Bop recordings, but my comment was about his own compositions. He's called The High Priest of BeBop, but that's really a limited period of his life.

Luckily for the horde....especially my 2nd oldest daughter that they had The Ancient One around to drop DA MONK and all the others on them....that and those 23 Chromosomes, BABY!

We have to spread the word to the Grasshoppas (no matter their age) while were still above ground. How else will they discover The Way without knowledge being dropped on them.

I could never stand those adults who complained about what those younger than them were/are listening/watching and left it at that. All the older posters who left because they felt the place was attracting too many younger posters who didn't just want to talk about the Beatles, Pink Floyd and Zeppelin are no different. HTF? are they supposed to learn if you just insult them or go Pontius Pilate on them and leave? Sure as hell not from MTV and their ilk.

Ok I have decided that I'm going to start with Kind of Blue and A Love Supreme first, and then let's see what come next.

I can see now, that I was a little not well informed about what jazz were. I thought it was all about feelings and emotions.

I'm starting to understand now, but I still have some few questions if you don't mind.

You said that everything but the melody in Jazz is improvised. Are you referring to jazz songs that have melody are not improvised or as melody being part of the song and the only thing that's not improvised?

Another question, do you think I can change my tastes? If I have been listening to some music almost all my life and then suddenly everyone is telling me that what I like really sucks. I'm still in a little shock here but can I change?

Who are the Grasshoppas and what they do? What is The Ultimate Horror?

And my last question would be about the subgenres you were talking about, that seems to be really interesting. Can you give a further explanation of each one of it? Oh and with some examples of artists and albums if it's not much asking?

Thanks in advance Satch, and everyone else that have posted in here too.

1. Ask as many questions as you want. You can't learn much of anything in this world without asking in one way or another. Your questions don't even have to be limited to Jazz or music for that matter.

2. You can find feelings/emotion in every single genre of music.

3. Ok, what I meant is that in most of the sub-genres of Jazz you will have written/composed parts for the melody (which is called The Head in Jazz) of the song/composition and than the solos are left up to the musicians to create for the recording/performance.

In something like Free Improvisiation there is no written parts. The musicians just start creating what is being heard as it happens. In some cases they don't even discuss with each other what they're going to play or how.

4. Jazz just like Blues, Classical, Rock, or any genre of music has several sub-genres; however, a very basic and I mean a very basic evolution of Jazz over the years would be....

New Orleans
Dixieland
Swing/Big Band
Bop
Cool Jazz
Hard Bop
Post Bop
Avant-Garde
Free Jazz
Free Improv

Kind of Blue would be Hard Bop/Post Bop meets Modal.

A Love Supreme would be Hard Bop/Avant-Garde meets Modal and with a touch of Free Jazz.

5. You think everyone here had the tastes they have now? Those with any real clue will have their minds and ears open....and it's no different to in anything in life to be honest. As Grasshoppa jazzfromhell mentioned....when young Grasshoppa Geryon showed up he was 12 or 13 and thought Slipknot was the shiznit. (OG Satchmo in DA House. I would like to give a shout out to my homies on the East/West/North/South side. Peace out.)

Only close minded people stay in a static state.

6. Grasshoppa is what I consider all of you to be. If you ever watched the Old School tv show Kung Fu you would understand it better.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGy_82awSPM

The Grasshoppas are all trying to take the pebble from Satchmo's hand....but still haven't done so.

P.S. A good bit of advise on discovering great musicians/recordings....is to keep track of the sidemen on the recordings which catch your attention. Most of them will be found on multiple recordings and eventually go on to become leaders in their own right. For example, a who's who of greats were sideman for Miles Davis before going on to lead bands of their own.

For example...

Sonny Rollins
John Coltrane
Bill Evans
Hank Mobley
Wayne Shorter
Herbie Hancock
Tony Williams
Sam Rivers
Keith Jarrett

Each of those have had greats as sideman as well....and Miles started out as a sideman for DA BIRD as in Charlie Parker.

You're welcome.

Oh yeah, The Ultimate Horror is something which is never mentioned by Satchmo or any Grasshoppa who doesn't want to be sent down to The Mines from The Factory.

I interrupt this program so I can call bullshit on this one.

No one can possibly think that Kenny G is one of the all time greatest musicians. I don't care how "subjective" music is.

I repeat. Not possible.

Back to your regular scheduled programming.
