Try searching with Grasshoppa Seba's handle and Genesis....he's made his thoughts clear several times....even as recently as the "Artists you dislike (to the surprise of others)" thread.

Yeah I get you. My point wasn't which album was better in terms on music, I think that's debatable. I was referring in terms of experimentation in which the Low and Heroes albums are on another ground, nothing else.

A real fine singer / songwriter that sort of flies under the radar is Danny O'Keefe. His imaginative songs about the human condition can draw you in. His time in the lime light was the 70s but he's still at it, and I think his music is relatively timeless. "Good Time Charlie's Got the Blues" was his big hit, but there's much more to enjoy beyond that. Check out his "Breezy Stories" album.
Another 70s 'one hit wonder' was folk rockers Brewer & Shipley. Like O'Keefe, their catalog of excellent tunes goes way beyond "One Toke Over the Line". Great vocal harmonizing and righteous power delivered with acoustic guitars. "Weeds" or "Tarkio Road" are the albums to check out. The only caveat may be that 'you had to be there', lyrics-wise, to really dig some of the tunes. Let your freak flag fly, bro.

I'm sure there's something I'll like, I just haven't found it a priority to get anything by him...i.e., there are many other artists/albums I want to get into before I touch Bowie's catalogue.

I can understand the position on Genesis. But as a solo artist, Gabriel made a point of eschewing that kind of high pretension. His songs from the mid seventies and onward demonstrate maturity, insishgt, and depth. On top of that, they're really friggin' catchy. To preclude a musician based on his previous efforts is to be deliberately closed-minded.

Okay, back on the soul subject...I feel like I should get into some Curtis Mayfield. Besides the first few solo records, is anything recommended?

Wow, I really haven't been paying enough attention to my collection. I just found Roots and Superfly.
I forgot I'd gotten those a long time ago.

I don't know how much of his music he wrote, but I've been on a Jackie Wilson kick as of late. Reccomended all the way.

Randy Newman has been creeping around my CD player recently. I think he fits the bill.
