The MElVINS were one of Kurts biggest influences along with the band mentioned by satch and ric.
An early sub pop bio describes their influences as " HR Puffnstuff, Marine boy, divorces, drugs, sound effect records, the Beatles, Ypung Marble Giants, slayer, leadbelly and Iggy.

I have never heard anything about BOWIE being a big influence, although they did cover one of his songs. BIG BLACK, THE BUTTHOLE SURFERS and GREEN RIVER were another 3 not yet mentioned. Nirvana also covered a few DEVO songs.

In a way, glam was a major influence on Nirvana.

Imagine there was some video footage discovered, Kurt watching a Poison video and saying "That's it! I'm gonna form my own band now!" LOL

there probably is something along those lines out there but i figure the comment is more reactionary than anything else. i'm pretty sure it would be more along the lines of 'FUCK THIS, i'm gonna start my own band now!'
influence is just influence, the positive or negative connotations do not diminish the level of influence applied.
