Krautrock

Either I'm not using the search function correctly, or the unthinkable is actually true:

There isn't yet a Krautrock thread on this forum!

About three years ago, Seba said:

we need a thread devoted to all the great Krautrock bands: Faust, Neu!, Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Amon Duul II, Ash Ra Tempel, Cluster, etc, etc, etc...

Here we go, then.

As a starting point, I'll mention that Steve and Alan Freeman's book 'The Crack In The Cosmic Egg' is a great resource for people interested in this tremendous music. Here's a reduced web version of it.

Julian Cope's 'Krautrocksampler' is good but out of print. It can be found on the internet as a .pdf download if you're persistent, though.

Right, let's hear some thoughts on 20 minute trance-a-thons, motorik beats, electronic noise, sturm und drang, Damo Suzuki's 'Japanglish' or whatever else about Krautrock flicks your switch and makes you go 'Yo!'

Julian Cope also has an interesting web site that reviews lots of unusual music. It's not krautrock centric, but covers music that would be of interest to folks who check out this thread:

Back to the topic at hand ... Lately I've had a hankering for a slab o' the big, heavy, thudding, distorted power of Guru Guru. A trio who's lengthy jams are a blast - if you're in the mood. Heck, their guitarist is named Ax. Time to break out the 'Kanguru' disc. Oxymoron!

If you want a good survey of Guru Guru's music, you can't go wrong with 'Space Ship' (Best of Guru Guru, part 1) on Cleopatra records. Turn it up (of course).

Nice one. Guru Guru are a band I've not yet checked out properly. I managed to find a copy of 'Tango Fango' on vinyl, but it was mainly bloody awful cabaret music! I gather it's not representative, though. Thanks for the recommendation.

Here they are in action:

That link is gold czgibson, thanks for it. And I just want to add that I love Krautrock, is one of the most original, inventive and innovative in rock.

Wow, I only had one Can record when I posted that...I've since added 7 more.

I'd love to strangle the stupid screaming girl in the crowd.

I've only heard Kraan and Popol Vuh from that list. Any recommendations from among the others? I'm curious to hear what Wallenstein are like - I've heard a few of them playing on Walter Wegmuller's 'Tarot'.
