That's still made by Fender and as mentioned above it's made in China, now.

What letters if any start the serial number?

don't take this the wrong way but calling a squire a fender is like calling an epiphone a gibson. hehehhe

either way it's a solid guitar to get going on. you'll probably end up getting a new one for quality as you develop as a player long before looks.

Hey, I wasn't saying they're high quality guitars....just the usual dropping of knowledge....but for a beginner it like the epiphone is good enough.

absolutely hehe i just added the distinction to avoid any potential faux-pas in the scene hehehe. if you tell people you have a fender they're going to expect to see a fender hehe. although out here a lot of people will automatically ask if it's mexican or american when they hear 'fender'.

and my original reply was more towards the comment that almost made you choke

Fender also makes a Lite Ash Tele in Korean. It comes stock with Seymour Duncan pickups and is a fantastic guitar for the money. I almost pulled the trigger on one but grabbed a different one on a whim. Beautiful birds eye maple neck and fingerboard on the Lite Ash Teles.

Korean guitars are very high quality now...Korea is the 'new Japan'. Some of the manufacturers out there who have great Korean operations are:
-Fender
-ESP (Ltd line 400 Series and up are all Korea)
-Ibanez
-the G&L Tribute Series from a couple years ago

It was made in Mexico. The MZ series started manufacturing in 2000. What is the first number which comes after the MZ?

As in, MZ1, MZ2, etc...

Anyone play a Mustang before? There seems to be a profusion of them here in L. A. Prices aren't bad.

Would this be an interesting addition to my little guitar family?

Does it have its own unique tone?

Roivas: Never played one before, I have to go pick up some new electric strings because I'm still using the stock ones they put on, so I'll see if the store I go to has one. I'm not that good with guitars and tone, but I'll try to give you an my honest opinion.
