Among other things.

I am starting to think this thread's purpose is to see who can get Satchmo to have an Aneurysm.

Not necessarily IMO. I think most of the members that have been around for awhile respect each other's opinions, no matter how absurd they are

It seems I'm winning in this thread because I'm the first person to cause any eyebrows to raise with an actual contentious statement. Now if any of you guys would argue with me we could have some real fun.

So about Cash--I like country music, I really do. That doesn't change the fact that it's one of the most stagnant genres of the past century, due in large part to artists like Johnny. The man must have released at least 50 albums and yet you could boil his entire career down to a couple of half decent country tunes that you can sort of tap your foot to.

Of course there's the whole draw of his attitude. The trouble is, while he may have walked the line (*snicker*) he never actually crossed it. He may have raised the hackles of a few bible-belt housewives, but there have always been artists elsewhere that put his "attitude" to shame.

And the whole pandering to the prison crowd thing reeks of insincerity.

How do you mean?

Oh, and I have to agree with you as far as the amount of music he's put out compared to the music thats actually worthwhile to listen to. I love his music but I only bothered to get a few albums (which I listen to frequently).

I mean he was trying to maintain that image of the outlaw (Cash only went to prison for popping pills). It had nothing to do with music; it was all artifice in place of substance. '68 and '69 were damn good years creatively for a lot of artists. While people like Dylan and The Byrds were reaching out in Cash's direction (i.e. incorporating country in to rock), Cash was still playing the same stuff (literally the same stuff) he had been playing all along only this time for inmates.

Mr. Soul

Not even

Courtesy of Wiki:

"He carefully cultivated a romantic outlaw image, but he never served a prison sentence. Although he landed in jail seven times for misdemeanors, each stay lasted only a single night. His most serious and well-known run-in with the law occurred while on tour in 1965, when he was arrested by a narcotics squad in El Paso, Texas. The officers suspected that he was smuggling heroin from Mexico, but it was prescription narcotics and amphetamines that he had hidden inside his guitar case. Because they were prescription drugs rather than illegal narcotics, he received a suspended sentence."

So are you arguing with me or against me? All that says is he is even less of the outlaw he purported to be.
