i can see how some people would call the hip our answer to the doors, but only in regards to the fact that both bands are fronted by poets. then again that would also mean that said individuals never actually paid any attention to either band beyond their surface impressions.

i mean seriously the hip is WAY closer to the doors than say... the tea party?

Unfortunately I don't have an article from a reputable publication to quote.
I found this article by googling the two bands together

Check out the write-up on Spiffle:
http://www.spiffle.com/rants/07-03-1997_08-25pm

There are more results to that effect when searching for the two bands.

In the press following the guys in their first few albums, it seemed to me that they were continually compared to the Doors, thus my use of the word "several."

(And I still don't like them - but I am definitely in the minority in Canada.)

Interestingly though, I clearly remember Jeff Martin being compared to Jim Morrison (and the band itself being compared to Led Zeppelin - mostly due to 'Save Me', I suppose) when Splendor Solis was released. On The Edges of Twilight though I think they thoroughly tried to destroy those comparisons.

Honestly, though, I really can see no similarities in, say, Morrison Hotel and Day For Night.

It could be though that The Doors - and especially Jim Morrison - annoy the living Christ outta me a la The Eagles, and I really dig The Hip (especially between Road Apples and Trouble at the Henhouse.)

dunno. i find 'the edges of twilight' has tons of zeppelin style riffage mixed in with middle eastern flair. it wasn't until 'transmission' that they really started to move away to my ears. you don't hear hints of 'kashmir' when you hear 'fire in the head'?

but i will agree that you would have to be on some serious acid to think the tragically hip sounds anything like the doors from a musical standpoint.

my old man's band was a hell of a lot closer to canada's answer to the doors than the hip will ever be.

Well, I said they 'tried' to damper the comparisons. For sure, Transmission was the initial moving toward something that was more entirely The Tea Party; though I enjoy Splendor Solis, Alhambra and The Edges of Twilight much more than Transmission or Triptych (but I do like 'Temptation', 'Release', 'Heaven Coming Down', and 'The Messenger'. Guilty pleasures, I s'pose). It was around this time that I started to not give a crap what they were doing, and then The Interzone Mantras and Seven Circles put the nail in the coffin. They've broken up now so it doesn't matter.
