Max Roach, R.I.P.

Just heard that he died earlier this morning. He had been suffering from Alzheimer's for several years. He was 83.

Max revolutionized Jazz and Drumming. He was the sole survivor from the Massey Hall Concert, which usually gets mentioned as the Greatest Concert Ever.

There will never be another like him. He was a True Master and his legacy will live on.

I went to the NY times website to look for an article on Tony Wilson passing away, and found this instead. A personally sad loss for me, Max was one of my personal heroes on the drums, and among the very best, if not the best period, to play the instrument. On top of that, one of the best jazz musicians on any instrument, and easily the most significant and best band leader to play drums. A true loss for not just jazz, but music itself.

RIP.

one of my favorite jazz drummers. I love his collab with Mingus and Ellington on 'Money Jungle' and his album 'Percussion Bittersweet'.

P.S. Five of DA GREATEST in their field have now died on August 16th....Robert Johnson, Babe Ruth, Elvis, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Max Roach.

P.P.S. When you're 83 and have had Alzheimer's for several years it's a blessing for it to finally end. It's even better when it's painless as possible while you're sleeping.
