I voted for Ella Fitzgerald, i also like bessie smith, I was thinking a lot what was her name, and some of you guys mentioned her so now i got her name...
About Diana Krall, i think that's the one jazz singer i like for now, i really enjoyed her Besame Mucho cover.

Ella all the way. Her phrasing, timbre, and delightful scats all mesmerize me.

Its Billie Holliday for me, without a doubt - her voice just turns me into 'butta'. Its so smooth and deep - sophisticated in one song, seductive in another, despondent in another, and each with a indomitable poise. *sigh* ...I'll be ok. I won't deny the supreme stylings of Ella or Sarah, but Billie does it to me in a way that they can not. I would also add (somewhat lesser known) Pat Suzuki and Julie London to this list of excellent female jazz vocalists.

I've always loved billie, because of her song "strange fruit" , it touched me so deeply, that I can never forget it.
