Yes, Carlos Chavez and Enrique Batiz are also great.

I don't really know how hard core mariachi would be, but a good ska band was La Maldita Vecindad y los Hijos del Quinto Patio and their best album was El Circo from 1991. youtube video

Mariachi is frickin' great.

By "hard core" I meant no watered down, overproduced, electronic mariachi.

All brass or guitars, not "hard core" in the punk rock sense.

I can't remember any right now, but I'm sure something like that will come to my mind.

Someone call a medic...

...Satchmo recommending a best of collection?!

Say it isn't so.

That said, it must be one hell of a collection.

I just don't care for compilations for someone like Coltrane, Zappa, or anyone with a large collection of recordings that you would end up getting. Also, there are cases were you can get rare recordings only on compliations.

Jorge Negrete was a also an opera singer. He appeared on many movies with Pedro Infante which is now considered as a national hero here in Mexico (he died on an air crash at the pick of his career), he is also released many records of mariachi, and yes the best of them are the compilations.
The biggest exponent of the mariachi may be Vicente Fernandez, and also the best of him are the collections.
