Just to clarify....you're looking for music that makes people not think?
Just turn on any radio station.

You know this is like saying try some Beatles, Hendrix, and Zeppelin or Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit and Slipknot.
I am sure you can guess which three would represent the Elevator music.

i like the beatles; i need to hear more hendrix and zeppelin to judge that quite honestly; linkin park, i used to like; limpbizkit and slipknot i dont care for....so idk.
but, the music to be used would really depend on the aim, audience, and pictures. and i'm pretty sure there are so many songs out there that are like mariah's "hero." but i'm not really in that loop, so i can't pinpoint any right now.

i believe mariah carey falls into the 'screeching diva' genre of music. you'd also probably enjoy stuff like celine dion. but where you're talking about tripping people out without straying to far from center i'd recommend stuff like enya, portishead, dido, zero 7, moby, air, etc. it'll have some good homogenized beats to space out on with some straight ahead vocals for people to latch onto.

How about Brian Eno? Music for airports is one that comes to my mind.
