it depends on the kind of jazz and the indevidual musician. i had to vote "i don't care" caus there wasn't another option that fit it.
voice can be so sexy, but so can sax, trumpet, flute, piano/keyboard, bass, drums, guitar, trombone... etc.
except i don't like clairinet.
when i listen to vocals in jazz, i'm usually not listening to the Words, but more to the Sound Of The Voice. when it's good, i usually find it sexual

for myself, i would have to say that there isn't an instrument that i've heard played in a jazz context that i didn't like if the player was good. like toots thielmans and the harmonica or richard galliano and the accordian. one of great things about jazz is that it can cast anything in it's mold. the early jazz musicians played instruments that were around and not too expensive. cornets were cheap, so a lot of people played them. they were marching band instruments. so were saxophones. i forgot where i was going with this. um... what i'm trying to say is that i don't have a favourite, i guess. it took a while for me to learn to listen to what's being played instead of how it sounds.
charles ives once said,
"A score is brought to a concertmaster-he may be a violinist-he is kindly disposed, he looks it over, and casually fastens on a passage: 'That's bad for the fiddles-it doesn't hang just right-write it like this, they will play it better.' But that one phrase is the germ of the whole thing. 'Never mind, it will fit the hand better this way-it will sound better.' My God! What has sound got to do with music! The waiter brings the only fresh eggs he has, but the man at breakfast sends it back because it doesn't fit his eggcup. Why can't music go out in the same way it comes in to a man, without having to crawl over a fence of sounds, thoraxes, catguts, wire, wood, and brass? Consecutive fifths are as harmless as blue laws compared with the relentless tyranny of the 'media.' The instrument!-there is the perennial difficulty-there is music's limitation. . . . Is it the composer's fault that man only has ten fingers? Why can't a musical thought be presented as it is born-perchance a 'bastard of the slums,' or a 'daughter of a bishop'-and if it happens to go better later on a bass drum than upon a harp, get a good bass drummer. That music must be heard is not essential-what it sounds like may not be what it is."
now, that quote has a few other sides to it, but i think some of it is very fitting to this discussion. i think what he saying was DESTROY ALL INSTRUMENTS! or maybe not. but the point is, an instrument is only a tool in the end, and some tools have flaws. or some performers have flaws, like not enough fingers. but the point is! we are only hearing what people are capable of, so we need an instrument that you can plug into your brain and then you can think up music. that would be pretty cool.
so i guess what i'm trying to say is, is that i like the bass clarinet. everyone should go out an listen to eric dolphy. he totally rocked!

I'm quoting myself. You can rock a party all by yourself with drums! It's the only instrument that can do that.
(besides turntables- a manual record player machine)(damn I'm gonna catch hell for that one!)- I respect Dj's, but (in most cases) you aren't making the music you're spinning. People like DJ Swamp and DJ Shadow are the exception, he's awesome. Really any awesome Dj is cool, but do they make the music. For example, a drummer has to hit the drums in order to produce a sound. You could DJ by just playin' records.....

consider each drum and cymbal as a sound unto itself. now consider each sound a dj uses as a sound unto itself. it's all just music and music is only three things. rythm, melody and harmony. when you're playing the drums, you're using the same sounds and rythms as every other drummer. it's the same when i'm playing guitar. i'm not using any notes that anyone hasn't used before. it's up to me to try and make something new out of them. it's extremely difficult to say the least. rythm is fun because there's so much you can do. when i first started learning how to play quintuplets it opened up a whole new world. now it's wierd not to play in 5/4 or 7/4 or 15/8 because 4/4 has been done a million times. so there's no end to what you can do with rythm.
and next time your at a party, try rocking the house with stairway on your drums. i dare you!

That's so funny! Stairway is one of the first songs I jammed along to on my kit. I think I could still play that whole thing with my eyes closed!.....Moby dick, that's another story.......
