Actually for me it is the exact opposite in terms of the jazz I often listen to (Miles, Monk, Coltrane, Ornette Coleman)... The interumental stuff is so complex that it often does take some concentrated listening.. I do like jazz vocals too and the lighter "cool" jazz instrumental style that is good for background music... But, I listen to that 50's and 60's more experimental stuff the most (although some of Coltrane's and Coleman's stuff goes too far for my tastes at times)...
