Well, if you want what happened to
Plant....you're going to have to get the flu and continue touring and singing when the
Dr. tells you shouldn't and thus damage your nodules, which will lower your range and give you that harsh voice he had afterwards.
P.S. The first time he caught the flu was on
January 2, 1973, when his car broke down and he had to hitchhike to the show. His problem with his voice lasted all of
1973. He would continue to catch the flu and sing when he shouldn't have many times over the next two years, afterwards. His voice really was never the same after
1975....the it will happen around the same time that
Page broke his finger and still continued playing.
You can really hear all this happening on the bootlegs from those tours. It's actually pretty depressing to hear how bad his voice was on several of those nights.
It was a different time back then. Bands didn't shut down tours or reschedule a show, like they do now.

It's not a natural voice....so there is no correct way of getting it. You get it by damaging your vocal cords/nodules one way or another.
Axl got it from not knowing how to properly use his diaphragm when singing and smoking.
