oh yeah i'm not disagreeing on the flu thing at all. just that i seemed to remember hearing that plant was a huge cigarette smoker for years.

as for the ganja rasp i think john garcia pretty much owns that one.

although i will say taking up an addictive habit that is pretty much guaranteed to cause health problems in the future so you can try to be successful in an industry as fickle and superficial as "the music business" probably isn't the smartest idea.

P.S. The first time he caught the flu was on January 2, 1973, when his car broke down and he had to hitchhike to the show. His problem with his voice lasted all of 1973. He would continue to catch the flu and sing when he shouldn't have many times over the next two years, afterwards. His voice really was never the same after 1975....the it will happen around the same time that Page broke his finger and still continued playing.

You can really hear all this happening on the bootlegs from those tours. It's actually pretty depressing to hear how bad his voice was on several of those nights.

It was a different time back then. Bands didn't shut down tours or reschedule a show, like they do now.

It's not a natural voice....so there is no correct way of getting it. You get it by damaging your vocal cords/nodules one way or another. Axl got it from not knowing how to properly use his diaphragm when singing and smoking.

Thanks, I think I'm gonna just sing normally

That's actually not true you actually can do any amount of rasp or even screaming without damaging your throat. I'm still being trained by a woman that has been in the lion king and the lord of rings musical here in toronto. She uses similar techniques for jazz and for belting. The secret is placement. You're thinking this raspiness has to come from the throat. Here some quick tips
1) Practice that scale your range (I'm guessing baritone) When you sing the notes sing "NYA" in a high pitched nasally almost cartoony voice. You'll notice that awful sound is coming from your head and not your throat. Your sinuses actually act as big resonators so you don't need to put in a lot of power to get a powerful sound. So in the scale really push that "NYA" use the consanant to throw the sound out there. So in doing that you'll get a feel of where your sounds should be coming from. Imagine that every sound is being shot from your nose/eye area opposed to your throat. Eventually you'' be able to those crazy rasps from the right place and you'll know it when you've done wrong because it will hurt. I'm not saying your throat won't get tired or that you feel like you've done some work, but it won;t hurt.

Hope this helps, if you wanna see it in action buy Melissa Cross' Zen of Screaming DVD, it has all the answers.

Correct technique of getting rasp into your voice? Forum

There is probably a good voice teacher in your local area. The best place to start looking for an instructor is to ask your choir teacher.

Ask your school choir teacher how to sing death metal. That's the logical first step.
