queens of the stone age - era vulgaris

so while i've been listening to this for about 2 weeks now i figured i'd wait until i had my own for real copy before posting my two reviews.

from the opening atmospheric touches of 'turning on the screw' to the sneering sarcasm of 'i'm designer' and capping it off with the mammoth 'run, pig, run' this is definitely one of the best QOTSA albums to date and one of the best hard rock discs i've heard in a long time. 'into the hollow' and 'suture up your future' are reminiscent of lullabies to paralyze without sounding like leftover tracks. in fact, most of the disc feels like a collection of new material from past albums (it's a very good thing).

unfortunately it's not to say the album is perfect. if you've listened to R then you're familiar with nick oliveri's manic vocals on tracks like 'tension head' or 'quick and to the pointless'. there is NO WAY i can hear 'sick, sick, sick' and not think the track would have been an order of magnitude greater with oliveri as a guest vocalist over julian casablancas from the strokes. the studio version of 'make it wit chu' also drags compared to the rawer version included on 'over the years and through the woods'.

those gripes are pretty much personal preference and don't really detract much from the album. the only other QOTSA album era vulgaris compares to is R in which case this new album is NC-17 in every way possible.

and now for my 2nd review... YEAH! FUCK YEAH!!!

yeah I like it too!

I agree with you about Sick Sick Sick, I'm probably a bigger Strokes fan than you and I think Nick would have worked a lot better than Julian.

I must hear the 'over the years and through the woods' version of make it wit chu since I really like that song.

You'd call this hard rock though?

i don't quite know what else to call it besides hard rock hehehe. it's not metal, it's not quite mainstream, not quite stoner rock either.

as for the live version of make it wit chu it's basically just a stripped down and slightly faster version of what you hear on the album, less filler and more killer.

it's kind of homme's own brand of stoner rock that he's developed over the years

anyway I absolutely love this album

I have a tough time distinguishing rock now, its either metal or rock to me.

I'll try and hear that version, sounds cool!

yeah i'm not a big fan of subgenres either 'hard rock' just seemed to fit in that sentence better .

i also highly recommend the live disc, it's great quality and a nice full 70 minute set by a band that understands how to play a live show. i also have a hard time listening to the album version of 'no one knows' because of the live disc too hehehe.

How about desert rock. Everything QotSA come out with sounds refreshing, unique and just plain good on very simplistic levels yet it's difficult music (to me) to make.

On a side not when I went to see QotSA live I went with 2 die hard math metal heads. They left impressed because their's crunch/ thud is ... impressive. (Damn my lack of adjectives)

Thud Rock may also classify.

yeah desert rock is probably the best fit for homme's style. it just seems like an absurd title and yes, they're an incredibly tight live band now. i've heard old mp3 bootlegs where that wasn't the case so much though.
