from the opening atmospheric touches of 'turning on the screw' to the sneering sarcasm of 'i'm designer' and capping it off with the mammoth 'run, pig, run' this is definitely one of the best QOTSA albums to date and one of the best hard rock discs i've heard in a long time. 'into the hollow' and 'suture up your future' are reminiscent of lullabies to paralyze without sounding like leftover tracks. in fact, most of the disc feels like a collection of new material from past albums (it's a very good thing).
unfortunately it's not to say the album is perfect. if you've listened to R then you're familiar with nick oliveri's manic vocals on tracks like 'tension head' or 'quick and to the pointless'. there is NO WAY i can hear 'sick, sick, sick' and not think the track would have been an order of magnitude greater with oliveri as a guest vocalist over julian casablancas from the strokes. the studio version of 'make it wit chu' also drags compared to the rawer version included on 'over the years and through the woods'.
those gripes are pretty much personal preference and don't really detract much from the album. the only other QOTSA album era vulgaris compares to is R in which case this new album is NC-17 in every way possible.
and now for my 2nd review... YEAH! FUCK YEAH!!!
