I've heard of the other bands you listed. I've always appreciated animal collective's creativity but could never get into them. Pandar Bear is pretty cool. I really dig that guy's vocals. Broken Social Scene is pretty sweet, I was in love with them until I exhausted their older albums and was disappointed with their new one. Postal Service is cool. Do they have a new cd yet?

Well if you like Broken Social Scene they have lots of other projects the members are involved in. Here are a couple that I like.

By Divine Right, pretty rocking so maybe not what you're looking for. But its very enjoyable, I like the album Good Morning Beautiful.

Feist, the solo project of Leslie Feist. She has a great voice so its hard not to enjoy this. The music is good, and different, from Broken Social Scene, a bit more electronic I guess? I think you should try her album Let it Die. The new one, The Reminder, is good but not as strong as Let it Die.

Too bad your not a fan of Godspeed because there is a group that combines Broken Social Scene, Godspeed, Do Make Say Think, Strawberry, Shalabi Effect, and is known as Valley of the Giants. On allmusic they are described as a super group. I wouldn't go that far but its still good music. Its a bit more experimental then Broken Social Scene with a country, desolate kind of twang to it. It might not be a favorite but its interesting and opens up with more listens. Parts of it remind me of Calexico, just much more experimental.

Apostle of Hustle is another good project.

Metric is pretty popular but I haven't heard them.

I think the Postal Service is working on something now, I'm not really sure (I'm not a big fan to be honest). But if you like them you would probably like where the singer is from, Death Cab For Cutie. I have never heard them but they are pretty popular so I'd say its worth a try.

Have you ever heard Of Montreal? Stereolab?

That link Satchmo posted is gold, but no Pantera for metal?

This thread needs a little,

But those lists are right on the money.

Thanks Blaze, but I don't know how to further reiterate how much I am sick of anything with the guitar/bass/drum lineup. I'm trying to find something truly unique, while you and Mr. Satchmo have listed some talented acts... it all seems to fall in a genre.

The problem is--- I don't really know what to say I am looking for. But it sucks when you can't even stand listening to music anymore.

Gospel, Jazz and DA Blues all fall in into a single genre with Rock?

Since you have no idea what you want or are not able to express what you want and somehow can't stand music.....I suggest taking up literature.

You know, it's a stretch...especially since you seem afraid of dissonance...but you might actually go for some of Alamaailman Vasarat's stuff:

That said, if you like that, you may need to start listening to some Klezmer.

I'd almost want to suggest Art Zoyd if, again, you weren't opposed to dissonance.

Van Der Graaf Generator? Has drums, but no guitar or bass. Flute/Sax/Keys/Organ/Vox?

So is everything you listen to... I wish I'd posted more in 2006 -- missed some interesting additions to this place.

They're on my list that was thrown to the curb. I say some Faulkner or Joyce is in order.

Satchmo:

I grew up listening to those styles of music, and no they're not all one genre, but they're all more or less based on the same three instruments. I'm not claiming some terrific knowledge or superiority to the musical world I am familiar with-- I can just no longer gain anything from it; any inspiration or emotion. And after being a musician for so long, I really feel like I need music that I am unfamiliar with, since when I hear a guitar or a bass I pretty much know what is happening and that somehow ruins it for me. Instruments I don't know in and out I think I could gain more from. I remember when I didn't understand music at all, when I was a kid, I got a lot more from it. And actually, literature is my forte and my passion, so thank God I have that, right?

Seba:

Not digging it dude but I appreciate the unique suggestion! Any other ideas? Specifically with piano and/or violins?
