Poll is up and I voted Zappa. I do like both artists but like jazzfromhell I have heard a lot more of the Zap and only a little of the captains work.

I am a bigger Zappa fan and, like others, it is because I have heard a lot more Zappa than Beefheart.

Very hard to choose, but Zappa's humor has generated a lot of laughs over the years. I liked his book a lot too, and there is simply more available.
Satchmo is correct - seek out all Beefheart asap.

Like Satch said, I like them both equally. I prefer Beefheart's vocal style by a long shot though.

I'm for Zappa as well. I enjoy his political awareness side. Registering people to vote at his shows, the attacks on the religious right, and overall distaste for censorship is nice.

I voted for Beefheart. It comes down to what I've heard, those being Trout Mask Replica on one side, and Freak Out and We're Only In It For the Money on the other. I like Trout Mask the most.
