hmm, there are LOTS of different ways you can go within a few of these genres so I am going to go with a few key, personal favorites within the ones I know the best.

1. Black Flag - Damaged
Dead Kennedys - Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables
Misfits - Walk Among Us

2. Talking Heads - Fear of Music (I think there are about 4 essential Talking Heads albums but I think it is a great place to start.

3. Now for some reason I feel like you are thinking more of the ska revival, which I don't know very well (I'm more familiar with the third wave stuff).

Ska
The Skatalites - Ska Authentic
The Skatalites - Foundation (good 2 disc set)
Trojan Records - Ska Boxset (I'm always pushing the Trojan boxsets but I really enjoy them)

Ska Revival
Madness (I'm not familiar with them but I think they were pretty important to the Ska Revival

3rd Wave Ska Revival
Operation Ivy - Knowledge

4. There are a couple ways you could look at this but I will take a guess and think that you mean later stuff.

Green Day - Dookie

5. Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
Joy Division - Closer

6. Minor Threat - Complete Discography

7. The Sex Pistols - Nevermind The Bollocks
The Ramones - Mania
The Clash - London Calling

8. Iggy & The Stooges - Raw Power

You should check out:

Bad Brains - S/T
Minutemen - Double Nickels on The Dime

Tanjello maybe its time for a best punk sticky?

4. pop-punk PROPAGANDHI "How to clean everything"

5. post-punk JOY DIVISION "Unknown Pleasures"

6. straight-edge punk MINOR THREAT "Complete discography"

7. punk rock: POISION IDEA "Feel the darkness"

8. any related style of punk music?

IGGY & THE STOOGES "Raw Power"
FUGAZI "13 Songs"
HUSKER DU "Zen Arcade"
THE DEAD KENNEDYS "Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables" & "Plastic Surgery Disasters"

By ska punk I am guessing that you do mean ska punk and not just regular ska music. I'm not all that clear about the definition between Post-punk and new wave. I am thnking new wave is more pop orientated music where as post punk is a bit artier/darker.

So is DK "hardcore" or just "related"?

Let the battle commence...

I am curious. Just what do people think the search engine feature is for, exactly? I am too old to constantly be repeating myself.

Scroll down this post and you will find more than enough Proto-Punk and Punk bands to keep you busy for a good time.

I agree. It's getting tiring. And Satchmo is way too old for me to keep repeating myself, either.

the issue with making threads sticky is that it doesn't detract from new threads. notice how there are currently 5 basically 'best of punk rock' threads on the front page of the punk section. and combining threads is a hassle that generally results in failure any time i've tried. besides, it's futile to go through the hassle of mashing together all the best ofs into one sticky that will just get ignored for another 'best of' thread because the sticky might not have enough 'real' punk in it or too much 'real' punk, or some other bullshit excuse some wanker wants to use to validate yet another repeat thread.

as for this current list...

1. hardcore punk - the offspring - smash
2. new wave punk - gary numan - cars
3. ska punk - fine young cannibals - the raw & the cooked
4. pop-punk - nomeansno - why do they call me mr. happy?
5. post-punk - stereolab - dots and loops
6. straight-edge punk - dead kennedys - fresh fruit for rotting vegetables
7. punk rock - ornette coleman - the shape of jazz to come
8. any related style of punk music - avril lavinge

(some of these are obviously BS - others are not. just like any other form of media 50% is worthwhile, it's up to your brain to determine which albums i listed are worthy and which are not)
