tanj - you're right that subclassification happens a lot in other genres also. it just seems to me that punks are far more uptight about it than other music fans. and i still don't understand why it's such a big deal. personally i think i might have seen a subdivided punk section in a store twice. and the only split was 'punk' and 'hardcore'. if a musical town the size of montreal doesn't need to split it's genres more than that in a 3 storey record store i don't think the subgenres are really that significant aside from acting like a pseudo badge to be pinned on the trademark punk rawk jacket.

now some people are claiming this thread is educational. i want to know what's been learned besides a few new band names. how does having a bunch of people listing off arbitrary records = learning about anything? i know that when mr.gooze started on about psychobilly oi! and skins i learned quite a bit about the history of those styles. but this thread.... just looks like another list of what to download to be 'punk'

BTW my favourite subgenre of punk is ...

Pan I'm sure we have had this conversation before, like almost exactly the same. If I had time I would dig it out but I'm sure we have done this before, post for post. At least we are consistant.

I think I am meant to now say something along the lines of "well maybe punk is like that more than other genres because the whole idea of punk extends past the music. It can influence lifestyle and political persuasion more so than other music genres and so people seem to take it a bit more seriously"

but I think I have already said that, about a year ago so I will just go to bed. cya

We have had this conversation several times. What's been learned in this thread, nothing really. However, you really should take into account the ages of those asking.

yeah i suppose but still. the net kind of eliminates the age thing, there's no expiry date on good music same as there shouldn't be a minimum age on knowledge. but yeah i'll just go back to making sure i'm far away from sober when i post on here

True, but people are not born with the knowledge. Just like you and I did before, they have to learn it and they learn by asking and/or reading.

Now break off with the Om Mani Peme Hung before I send the damn Squirrels!

Supposing that's not educative enough, I have also learnt that if I ever hear something about a band associated with a particular subgenre, I will be more/less likely to like it.
