as for this current list...

1. hardcore punk - the offspring - smash
2. new wave punk - gary numan - cars
3. ska punk - fine young cannibals - the raw & the cooked
4. pop-punk - nomeansno - why do they call me mr. happy?
5. post-punk - stereolab - dots and loops
6. straight-edge punk - dead kennedys - fresh fruit for rotting vegetables
7. punk rock - ornette coleman - the shape of jazz to come
8. any related style of punk music - avril lavinge

(some of these are obviously BS - others are not. just like any other form of media 50% is worthwhile, it's up to your brain to determine which albums i listed are worthy and which are not)

When I first saw that list and before I hadn't gotten to the Ornette Coleman....I was thinking it was time for the Grasshoppa to step away from the Ganja.

Wow, how cool and original. A great way to show off your non-conformist views.
Actually I haven't seen another thread that is as educative in the different types of punk as this one is.
And I hope that one of your "jokes" is DK, cause I like their style but I hate straight edgers.

WHY DO SUBGENRES MATTER?

SERIOUSLY WHY THE FUCK DO THEY MATTER SO FUCKING MUCH TO YOU GODDAMNED "punks"?

everywhere i look there's always a bunch of stereotypical punks going on and on about how they're fucking real and fucking original and absolutely 'not' conforming to society's wishes by looking like a goddamned magazine cutout from 20 fucking years ago. on the bus, at work, on the street, in the mall, at the grocery store, everywhere.

it seems like every fucking punk i run into is so up their own ass and too busy circle jerking their sex pistol to make sure they're only listening to the 'good', 'real' punk to notice the fact that they ARE the punks they hate. the guy at the record store doesn't think you're cooler for buying some obscure descendents album. they don't care that 90% of the joy division sales of the last few years are directly related to the fact that interpol sounded EXACTLY like them and that all the emo fucks were whining about stabbing. themselves. in the neck.

you're right though. the DKs aren't one of my joke choices. they're what i listen to when i want to hear THIRTY YEAR OLD PUNK ROCK. i don't care to hear new bands trying to rehash their stuff though. yet, lo and behold, if you're not trying to sound like 30 years ago you're not 'real' punk rock. because 'real' punk rock is about staying in that stupid little box that malcolm mcdowell used to sell his clothes out of. but if you try to break away from it you'll clash with the 'true' essence of 'punk rock'.

nomeansno is my favourite 'punk' band but they hardly sound like any of the holy triumvirate of punk rock. then again the album i listed is basically drums, bass, voice and occassional guitar overdubs and it sounds a fuck load better, fuller, and more intense than most bands calling themselves punk. then again they follow the duke's philosophy on music and don't waste any energy parading themselves as anything besides music and leave it up to the listener to determine whether they fall into the good or bad category.

i'm gonna hit my fucking bong now.

I would also suggest the Padmasanam and a few thousand Om Mani Peme Hung, as well.

Sorry to ask this dumb question.
Does political-punk count for a style of punk music?

how about we make a subgenre for every 4 punk bands out there. as of right freaking now there is absolutely no subgenre of punk that needs to ever have more than 4 bands in it. ever. some really awesome bands like blink 182 and well they're all over the place. man that song they had with the piano. killer man.

actually. i just REALLY want to know why the subgenres matter? really. WHY????
