Cool Recent Discoveries

I figured this would be a decent thread topic that I haven't seen yet. (( correct me if there's already one of these somewhere ))

What artist are you just now getting into, or have just discovered that you enjoy?

As I also posted in the prog section, my current one is Žoambo žoet workestrao. I'd been putting off getting something by them for a while, but having now done so, I'm very glad I did. Extremely talented Slovenian group with plenty of angular, dissonant guitar work and frenzied, ever-evolving arrangements.

For those who want a taste:

Note - I can't read the text on that website, but those appear to be legit sample tracks, especially since they're only @ 128kbps.

Okkervil River - they call themselves folk-punk. I'd half-agree. They're kind of similar to Neutral Milk, but not nearly as good and not lo-fi. Their last album, Black Sheep Boy, is great and is based off of a track by Tim Hardin. I like the following (legal from their website) track because it's got a punch to it, but is also oftentimes very soft. Don't turn it up too high or you'll be surprised by the distorted guitar about a half a minute to a minute into the song.

Edit: I'm digging that band you found.

Impressive. I can't remember a single artist that I've ever heard via TV that I enjoyed this much. Their style is very unique but familiar enough to me given my other tastes that I loved it immediately. Based on pure aesthetics I get traces of Flogging Molly, Uz Jsme Doma, and the Tiger Lillies...but I suppose you'd get that from anything relating to punk rock and accordions.

Anyway, it's Gogol Bordello...apparently I'd already been exposed to them via "Everything Is Illuminated" but wasn't driven to explore further. Definitely going on heavy rotation this week.

I have to say though, the live performance I saw on TV was much better than their studio recordings -- not just for the incredible performance style they have but the music is much more energetic and lively.

recent

Recently I've come across a couple new bands. Well..they are new to me...not sure how new they are to you all. =)

Film School -- sort of experimental rock like The Mars Volta with the sound of The Cure. F'ing awesome.

Scrabbel -- sort of Belle & Sebastian sounding with that '50-'60s rock sound. Innocent sound.

Started listening to Dog Fashion Disco...I don't think I like it, despite generally going for this style of music...the Bungle/Patton worship may be just too much to enjoy; based on having listened to "Anarchists Of Good Taste", it doesn't seem like they have anything to add beyond being a Bungle rip-off......well, a less interesting/talented/more commercial sounding one...

...I suppose if you REALLY like Mr. Bungle they could be a good suppliment in their absence....or, if you find Mr. Bungle to be a bit too "out there", this could be a good substitute as they tend to adhere a bit more to tranditional hard rock/metal song structures.

Ok, forget this whole post... listening deeper into the album they even start ripping off Thought Industry and Primus of all things. Pass on this one. These guys are the Godsmack of experimental metal.

Was listening to the New Pornographers last night...I'd have to say, I like those lads. And it sounded like there was a lass in there as well.
