Well, the same could be said for anything. To me, it just seems less important in free jazz.
And, as with everything, it's relative -- I'd expect more conscious math-oriented creative decisions to happen in Ornette's style of free jazz than Brotzmann's, for instance.
Oh well, I suppose it doesn't matter, as it's not as if I'm paying attention in either case. Just bring the noise!

Well, the music=math discussion seems a bit pointless if we start talking about how everything's governed by mathematics.

I suppose I was talking more about math being a conscious ingredient in the music making process rather than an inseparable part of the product.

Well now you just killed this thread. I am taking my ball and going home....ok, I know I almost never leave my home (as in going to classes, PPC conventions, and making sure my fiancée has enough bottles of water when saving animals)....but I am still taking the ball. Any news about The Ruins playing in my living room anytime soon?

Hey now, I've actually managed to go see 3 flims in the past month or so, so it's hardly all that bad.

I notice that you didn't mention seeing them outside of your home.

I tend to reason people out of this "music is math" nonsense whenever I can. Counting to four is not "math."
Haven't you heard people say "Bach is all math"?
Yes, there are underlying mathematical principles in EVERYTHING. Oil painting...basket weaving...etc.
The fact that math is quite useless when composing a complex, tonal symphonic work is my point.
Obviously, some music is actually composed mathematically (Xenakis...etc.). A difference should be recognized is all I want to say.
Acoustics - math
Tuning and temperament - math (with exceptions)
Composing - no math (with exceptions)

Time for some light classical music.
Okay...I just saw my friend play in the American Youth Orchestra.
Mahler's Fifth and this boring, "I have a music degree" piece by Stucky.
Did I miss the memo?
Are we supposed to clap between EVERY movement now?
Flip through magazines during the pppp parts?
Leave cell phones on?
Because of the dimwits applauding for no reason, I noticed that Mahler put (I don't know the name of this device) an "extended fermata" (you know, a clarinet will hold a note between movements to keep everyone quiet) between the fourth and fifth movements. Duh! Having a fifth movement was a novelty at the time and he had to suppress the audience somehow...funny how I didn't notice this until I saw it live for the second time.
