Red face A little guiding, please.

Hi. I'm really starting to realize that I really love music. I know what I like when I hear it but popular music these days is just not cool. I really think my generation got a messy end of a stick when it comes to music. Anyway, I just heard a Miles Davis album for the first time the other day, Kind of Blue. Really, I was so amazed by how excellent it was. Really, I've never heard anything like that before in my life! So, I've been reading up on Miles Davis and am going to go shopping tomorrow to get another album of his.

So, if you all could help a blossoming music enthusiast, what other great jazz trumpeteers must I absolutely listen to?

So many thanks.

Well you are not the first to come to the jazz section fresh from listening to Miles Davis (http://www.radiomute.com/16625-just-...-feet-wet.html or http://www.radiomute.com/11327-what-...you-jazz.html).

There is a great suggestion list stickied at the top of the jazz section: http://www.radiomute.com/9238-suggestions.html which will give you hours of listening.

Another great resource here is http://www.radiomute.com/11654-essen...zz-albums.html

I can think of one other jazz trumpeter that you may have heard of , Louis Armstrong. I picked up the complete Hot Fives and Sevens (here is the exact one I bought: http://www.amazon.com/Hot-Fives-Seve...6464567&sr=8-5 ) and it is a great collection.

Some personal favorites of mine that aren't Miles Davis are:

John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
Charles Mingus - Mingus Ah Um
Herbie Hancock - Fat Albert Rotunda

It brings a tear to Satchmo's eyes when the Grasshoppas grow up and start dropping knowledge.

First off....welcome to The Way of Satchmo

Trumpet players.....you will find my list for all the other major instruments in this thread, as well.

One more point.....if possible, try to make sure you're getting one of the recent remasterings.

I'm not an expert on Miles Davis either but I really like 'Seven Steps to Heaven' a lot.

Also, ditto on that John Coltrane album, BTW I believe Coltrane is playing Sax on Davis' "Kind of Blue".

1 & 2. Yes!

I have mentioned this before, but up until 1997 every previous version and that includes the original lp of Kind of Blue was released in the wrong pitch.

I rarely bother with liner notes and I remember when I first heard the corrected reissue and went WTF?.

Ohhhh yeah! I know Louis Armstrong. I forgot about him. I don't really know any of his music though, so I'll be sure to check it out. Thanks.

I also know John Coltrane from Kind of Blue. It's really cool. Does he have any other albums that I should listen to?

Thank you Satchmo8101! I was talking with my dad about music earlier and he said he would help me out to buy some CDs. I told him about Louis Armstrong and his Hot Fives And Sevens and my dad said he would buy it for me! You said I should choose a recent remastering. Is there a certain one I should get?

First of all, your Old Man is awesome.
I'll let Satch handle the 'which remaster' question.

I'll recommend just a couple of my favourite jazz artists, though they all lie outside of the trumpeteer school.

School yourself on Thelonious Monk. Since you like the sax on Kind of Blue, get 'Thelonious Monk & John Coltrane' and 'At Carnegie Hall' both by Monk featuring Coltrane.
Lee Morgan's 'Sidewinder' is one of my favourite jazz feasts.
Get some Nat Adderley, especially 'Work Song'.
And if you haven't heard Art Tatum (aka, God), you haven't heard piano. 'Art Tatum's Finest Hour' is a good, easy start.

Enjoy little dude.

1. Did you check the links that Grasshoppa Just Blaze gave you in his post?

2. Considering Coltrane is probably one of the top 5 or 10 most influential musicans of the last 50-years....that would be a yes. Just to name a few Rock bands that he influenced in one way or another: Hendrix, The Doors, Led Zeppelin, King Crimson, The Stooges, and The Byrds.

There is a lot of knowledge in many of the older threads in the Jazz section. Just use my handle to search and you will find a many musicians, periods, and recordings that I have dropped on the Grasshoppas.

For example....two of the threads on Louis Armstrong.

http://www.radiomute.com/10188-louis-armstrong.html

http://www.radiomute.com/18330-best-...es-sevens.html

Something to keep in mind. Keep track of the sidemen that you like on each of the recordings. Many of the greats at one time or another were sideman on other greats recordings. Miles Davis for example was a sideman with Charlie "Bird" Parker. John Coltrane with Miles Davis....it's pretty much a who's who of jazz for those that have played with Miles, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Art Blakey.

So.....those sideman that catch your interest could end up leading you to their recordings and other sidemen, etc.....

Jazz just like rock has a lot of styles, but a very basic, and I mean a very basic evolution would be

New Orleans
Dixieland
Swing/Big Band
Bop
Cool Jazz
Hard Bop
Avant-gard
Free Jazz/Free Improv

And many of these have sub-styles, as well as styles in between those.

Kind of Blue for example is Hard Bop that used Modal improvisations.

If you wanted a discussion of Hard Bop....
