There are two box sets of the Hot Fives and Sevens. One released by JSP and one by Sony. On the first three CD's the music is the same....the 4th CD for each includes different Non-Hot Fives and Seven recordings.

In terms of the remastering....Some people prefer the JSP and some the Sony. I prefer the JSP version, myself. The Sony is currently considered out of print.

The JSP also sells at a cheaper price.

I would also suggest looking for a used copy of either one if money is an issue. It's not like either label is giving his estate any money for either version.

The JSP version:

The Sony version:

P.S. Now keep in mind that these are recordings that are up to 82-years-old....when recording technology was still learning to crawl.

I'll let Satch handle the 'which remaster' question.

I'll recommend just a couple of my favourite jazz artists, though they all lie outside of the trumpeteer school.

School yourself on Thelonious Monk. Since you like the sax on Kind of Blue, get 'Thelonious Monk & John Coltrane' and 'At Carnegie Hall' both by Monk featuring Coltrane.
Lee Morgan's 'Sidewinder' is one of my favourite jazz feasts.
Get some Nat Adderley, especially 'Work Song'.
And if you haven't heard Art Tatum (aka, God), you haven't heard piano. 'Art Tatum's Finest Hour' is a good, easy start.

Enjoy little dude.

All of Coltrane's recordings with DA MONK should be in any collection. That would be:

Monk's Music - essential Monk.

Thelonius Monk Quartet w/ John Coltrane - At Carnegie Hall

Thelonious Monk With John Coltrane - the Father of the Tenor as in Coleman Hawkins also is on two tracks. Essential is an understatement.

Thelonious Himself - essential solo monk with one track with Coltrane.

Live at the Five Spot - Until the discovery in 2005 of the "At Carnegie Hall" recording, this was the only known live recording of Monk & Coltrane. While the music was excellent the recording had a lot to be desired. It was recorded by Coltrane's first wife and the mike was in her purse.

While I agree about Tatum being DA MAN on the piano....I would skip the compiliation and just got those mentioned in this post....that way there is no repeating of tracks and wasting of money later on.

One more thing....I would suggest checking Youtube. They have a great many videos of many of the greats....including Satchmo, Coltrane, Miles, Art Tatum, and DA MONK.

You can save videos on youtube with one of these programs.

one thing that you have to check out is thelonious monk,
the most increadible jazz composers ever

not to mention charles mingus, you know how in most things you have people backing up and people take turns doing solo's or leads or what ever you want to call em

what mingus does is he takes everything and blends it together, like classical music
Listened to otis redding with sitting on the dock of the bay

1. DA MONK was DA MAN.

2. That's not accurate. Mingus had heads and solos, as well.
