One thing I hated about that album cover was the zipper handle would scratch the LP covers I had stored next to Sticky Fingers... I always had to be careful about pulling that album out... I think one day I got frustrated and ended up tearing that zipper and handle out or I may have just put the album in another cover (I can't remember, it hs been many moons ago)...

Why didn't you just put the album at the end of the shelf, with the back cover against the next album and the front cover touching the side of the shelf? Or just use a little tape and put some cotton over the zipper?
