Mike Watt

Possibly better in the Alternative section but fuck it.

I was clicking around all music recently and stumbled onto the bassist Mike Watt. I clicked a bit more and this guy seems totally awesome and someone I have never heard or heard of before. He seems to have his hand in quite a few groups too, so where do you think would be a good starting place for this guy?

I think the answer is going to be the minutemen (I have never heard them either!) but I would also be interested in another album that is particularly good that he worked on (firehose maybe?)

Actually I have heard him now that I think about it, I do own the porno for pyros album with tahitian moon on it. I don't really remember the bass being anything spectacular but I will dig it up from my collection if someone else disagrees.

damn I don't know how you could miss someone like Mike Watt
one of my favorite bassists of all time, probably one of the best in any punk scene
his best stuff is with Minutemen, you should probably check out the album Double Nickels on the Dime
Firehose really never grabbed me the right way but the bass is still pretty good, I'm not sure which albums you would want to get by them
he worked a lot with Stephen Perkins (drummer of Jane's Addiction, I'm sure you know that) side project Banyan, check out Live at Perkins' Palace for some good jazz inspired shit
his solo stuff is supposed to be pretty good too, I don't know how bass-centric it is though
he played bass on the new Stooges album that just came out, but I'd stay the hell away from that
other than that, anything you can get is probably gonna be good
now I'm just rambling

I have a friend who's met Mike Watt and she has a friend who fucked him apparently and they chill all the time

Double Nickels on the Dime is a great, great album. Highly reccomended. Other than that, all I know I've heard by him is a song from one of his solo albums called "Contemplating in the Engine Room", which is pretty good.

Alright cool, I'll give Double Nickels on the Dime a go.

Thanks for the help, I still don't know how I could miss someone like him.

Double Nickels on the Dime is AMAZING!!!

Aside from those tight bass lines the Minutemen serve up some really good music and a lot of it too!
