I think that is true for all the sections, general music seems to be getting more popular.

This site has so many people on it but they are all guests...

yeah and the rock section has always had more visitors anyway. it just seems that the electronic part of the board has a few that come in for awhile, get bored, and then leave.

I don't personally see how it is off topic, it's an electronic artist who is facing a very real issue that affects a lot of electronic artists.

Thankfully my last album didn't hit the download sites till AFTER it was out (although it does seem to have hit them bigtime).

While there's not a lot of money in the album sales I'd much rather the label got enough money to stay afloat and at least make some kind of profit from my release. After all, electronic labels are folding all the time and while downloads aren't necessarily the killing blow they're certainly a slice in the gut.

no Keith, the post I was making at the time was off-topic. not the actual thread.

I agree that downloads are a 'slice in the gut', but any new electronic label knows that they're going to be fighting an uphill battle when it comes to sales.

Theoretically, do you think electronic artists would have that big of a following without programs such as soulseek? Electronic music hasn't gotten any bigger over the years...the number of artists has, therefore creating more labels. Hell, if it wasn't for soulseek, I wouldn't know of 3/4th's of the artists that i know of...I may not even know about you.

I know the point of this isn't the fact of money as a business, but I've always said that if an electronic artist is getting into making music for a decent income, then they need to wake up and smell the coffee

I absolutely agree. It's a great way of learning about an artist, if that's the way you use it and there are a lot of people who do.

There are also on the flipside a lot of people who download constantly, gave 100s of gigs of music they'll probably never listen to and will never buy any. Sometimes it's like going to an immense buffet. There's so much on offer you don't know where to start so you just stick with chips and dips.

Like a lot of things, it's a double edged sword with both pros and cons to it.

I think my main issue is the download culture. It's like the quote from Tom Shear of Assemblage 23. He had someone come up to him and say, "I'm your biggest fan, I've got all your mp3s".

It's the fact that someone would think that saying that wouldn't be a problem and would in fact be congratulatory proof of their fandom that gets me.

That's very very very true.

I don't think any of them do, but some of the labels do of course.

I'm going to remove the names but the following applies to a famous electronic label

X who runs Y is a good mate of mine. When I went to Berlin I met up with him a few times. Even then he only took SOME time off because he works round the clock in order to get enough money to live off and keep Y afloat.

If sales dwindled and he needed to take a normal job then Y would likely suffer because of that, just due to the time, and maybe, like a lot of other labels the damage would be too much.
