If she likes Bon Jovi, power to her. At least he (John) is actually a somewhat good example of a human being. And he's still in the public eye. Most 80s starts now only get updates when they flop out of rehab or get divorced/married/attacked/ some other tabloid type interest.

Nah it is not harsh I was simpily asking the question. If this person can't take some criticism of some music that she likes well then she shouldn't post on a music forum. If I like sonic youth and someone calls them pretentious arty farty loosers who can't sing or play in tune, I would be happy if anything that someone was starting a debate about music, isn't that one of the reasons we are here.

Unlike a lot of people on this forum I was a teenager in the 80's and I know how bad corporate cock rock can get. I was saying nothing about Jon Bon Jovi as a person, I just find it hard to understand how people can be getting back into that crap.

i TOTALLY hear you on this. we've got a lot of young people at my work and they're all about how cool the 80s were while never cluing in. i'll admit i thought bon jovi was cool when i was in grade 8, that was also 1989 and we didn't have the internet to provide us with unlimited downloads, there were no music forums to discuss and learn about new styles, there was no allmusic.com to rate and catalog just about everything ever released. for our generation of teens we were reliant on the radio, word of mouth, and if you were wealthy enough to have cable or a satellite dish you had mtv or muchmusic.

now i find myself wondering if all these teens even realize that you can use the internet for more than keeping tabs on their myspace page and camwhoring. the worst for me though is what's passing as 'punk' today. holy fuck does that shit ever piss me off. any single old school punk band worth the title had something worthwhile to say, something to make you think thoughts that pissed you off to the point of action. not some fucking whiny emo cack lifting melodies from the fucking thompson twins or some other garbage 80s band and screaming about getting his heart broken.

i'll admit i'm not the biggest punk rock guy here but i'm pretty certain jello / rollins / mackay / strummer never whined about getting dumped in their tunes.

Lynncookie: my recommendation is....listen to Panbient.

A better question is what is with the sudden surge of Slipknot, No Doubt, Offspring, etc, fans....speaking of which, just how is anyone over the age of 12 a fan of those groups?

Now way that I can see Team-Rancho importing them in for his possible Coup d'état, because T-R and them are like Oil and Water.

That's because Punk originally was about being angry about being broke and unemployed.

There is no such thing as a return of glam (or cockrock as some refer to it)! Yea, there's a few guys with bigger hair, if not really big hair. Yea, there's guys with spandex, make-up and custom-painted guitars. Alright. But where're the monster-riffs? Killer-solos? Big ass chorus on the guitars? Big ass drums? And big ass production? And most of all, big emotions?

Might sound strange coming from me but primarily I care about actual music, not clothing or hairstyles. I wouldn't have a problem with glam-sounding bands with casual clothing/haircuts, as log as they don't wear baggies.

The musical gap between today's bands and 80s-rock couldn't be bigger.

My recommendation (back to topic) would be:

Listen to

- The final countdown (Europe)
- Pride (White Lion)
- Look what the cat dragged in (Poison)
- Turbo (Judas Priest)
- New Jersey (Bon Jovi)
- Dr Feelgood (Mötley Crüe)

if you wanna know about 80s rock.

Bon Jovi's singles still chart in the German top40, they still play major gigs here and are BY FAR the most poplar act (if not the only) from the 80s still popular today.

BTW, while Bon Jovi were huge in America in the 80s they only ever had one single in the top20 here in that decade (Livin' on a prayer), and that peaked at #19 for one week and dropped again. And while in the early 90s 'Keep The Faith' was a commercial disaster in America it triggered their career in Europe, KTF becoming the best selling album of the entire decade in Europe.

EDIT: Still don't like their newer albums much. 'These Days' was their last decent effort.
