Dubstep - Burial

hi everyone. i've got the distant lights ep by burial and have been a little obsessed by it lately. i love the dirt in the way he treats beats and i thought i'd start a thread for anyone to share thoughts on dubstep artists, interviews on the web, etc. i live in brooklyn, not south london, so i'm not in the vicinity of the dubstep scene but i feel attracted to this music, at least that which i've heard from burial.

yeah, the full length that Burial came out with this year was on a lot of top 10 lists. They're good, I won't deny that.

There's a great piece on dubstep in the latest issue of "Signal to Noise" that I read today. They cover the influential producers and give a good history of the scene.

what's the deal with dubstep (the style). i've seen the term tossed around as the next big thing in some hipster magazines but haven't been able to check anything out yet. is burial the best place to start? how does it relate to more traditional dub? is it more mad professor or mouse on mars?

definitely not mouse on mars. I'm not an expert, so I can't really say, but it is pretty popular amongst others. If you like it, you'd probably like the UK grime scene as well. Some other artists associated with these 2 styles are:

Distance
Skream
Loefah
Kode 9
Youngsta

hehehe yeah i was kind of getting turned off of new electronic action since all the new stuff i was hearing seemed to be moving more towards glitch or 8-bit sounds. i like that this still has a very tangible groove and organic feel running throughout.
