Extinction Level Event (Final World Front) -Busta Rhymes

This album makes a great millennium obsessed companion to Tical 2000. It has great skits, fantastic production, incredible lyrics, very hard rockin' tunes, an ultra-negative outlook, a sense of humor and possibly the: BEST. RAPPING. EVAAAAH.

P.S. He's got condoms made out of other people's dicks.

I really don't have much exposure to Busta Rhymes aside from his singles and parts in other peoples songs. He is really talented so I should have something of his in my collection.

I did seem him live once too which was cool.

Now Tupac,

Like I said earlier in the thread I don't think I am the person to do this since this is my only full album exposure that isn't a compilation/mixtape. But regardless this is a true classic album and is the place to start for Tupac. Tupac has style all of his own. It is definitely gangster, but at the sametime he provides witty insight; he also has the ability to produce more personal rhymes. His delivery is great and is impossible to confuse, the energy of DMX but can adapt to a beat perfectly. He is a great speaker. This album really shows his gangster side. The beats are excellent, well crafted and he adheres really well to them. There are plenty of memorable singles for any occasion. The guest appearences are great, I personally love Snoop on 2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted.

So yes this is a great album, really can't be denied. If you have no exposure to Tupac and want to understand the hype, 1 play through will no dobut enlighten you.

Original Pirate Material -The Streets

The best foreign hip hop I can think of, The Streets are a very original band. They come across as hard hitting, honest and relevant. Very interesting from a lyrical and a musical standpoint. Fantastic debut.

Madvillain - Madvillainy

MF Doom and the people he collaborates with are so underrated and he's just starting to get the recognition he deserves. This album is by far his best work. Considering he does most of the work on this album I tend to have a bias towards MF Doom because he does rap a lot on this. My God, every single duo MF Doom works with end up being amazing, ie. Dangerdoom...Also the newest album by Madvillain is coming out this year, watch out for that

I gave one play through to either Original Pirate Material or A Grand Don't Come For Free and it just didn't work for me. I don't remember what it was but the flow just felt awkward and the beats weren't anything great. I don't know, I was distracted at the time so I think I owe him a second chance, I was surprised at how my ears didn't like it since friends who have similar tastes suggested him to me.

Madvilliany, I love Madlib and MF Doom. I must say I do like Doom on other stuff better though. Regardless this is a nice pick a good display of both of their talents.

As for Streets

Stand out tracks include Dry Your Eyes, Stay Positive and Has it Come to This.

Those tracks are all appealing enough to be first time winners upon listening. Get to know those tracks and then you can start to see where the Streets are coming from on the bigger scale.

Well,

this has been a damn fine thread. Fans of hip hop should listen to jazz. Jazz fans should listen to hip hop. I don't think this thread has set out to be all inclusive but still I think it's a good resource of information. I don't think I have much more to add. Eminem probably deserves mention but I leave that to someone else if anyone cares. Some stuff like the SUC got short changed but whatever. JB, keep on rockin'!

Alright I`ll put on those tracks sometime soon and give them a sample.

This thread has a lot of information in it and I thank you for introducing me to some new classic material. I agree with you on being almost exhausted but I can think of another couple to keep this thing going.

Big L
I was first introduced to this guy as being one of the top 3 rappers ever in a list that ordered Tupac, Biggie, then Big L. I am not sure if I think that claim is entirely true but I would not dispute Big L being on anyones top 5 or 10 list. Now I know what you're thinking cause I thought the same thing, with an intro like that how can he possibly live up? I've never even heard of this clown! Well if given an honest chance he can definitely produce a result. His flow is great. He has an incredibly natural aura like he was born with a mic in his hand. He is definitely one of the better one liners, and if he were still alive today I think that skill alone would have made him very successful. His beats can be pretty good but that is one of the weaker spots with his work. Still his rhymes make up for it and create the catchiness. To me he very much resembles biggie in his delivery so I thought he was great from the start. The saddest part of Big L's story is that he was killed just before he was about to take off (I was told he had JUST signed to rocafella before his death), leaving him as a 'what if' story. But regardless he this guy is great, this album holds some of his best work with guest appearances ranging from Cam'ron (then known as killa kam), and an early Jay-z. This combined with his second album The Big Picture easily show why this was one of the saddest losses in 90s hip hop.

Lost Boyz

Keeping this post within the 5 boroughs, I think this is a great addition to a hip hop collection. The Lost Boyz are relatively unknown but some of the members have appeared in the mainstream. Still the first half of this album is awesome and instantly appealing on a number of levels. The beats are poppy but the skills shine through easily. The first 3 tracks build up very nicely to beasts from the east where canibus destroys everything you thought you knew about a good verse (but brings up the question as to why he could never produce a good studio album!). After the first 3 bangers the album gets spotty, never terrible but just not great; still there is A+ material that hip hop fans will enjoy. It isn't incredible or ground breaking but it is fun and can appeal to a variety of tastes.

I think the Marshall Mathers LP is the best place to start when looking for an intro to Eminem. Personally I think his best display of skill comes from his earlier stuff, I have it labeled as Infinite on my computer, and as a guest on tracks (More specifically Dead Wrong, We All Die Someday, and purple pills). But The Marshall Mathers LP is the best place to start to get the overall picture of Eminem, his skills, and the controversy that surrounds him. This album has some great beat work, memorable tracks, and even some hits too. Eminem does play around with interesting ideas for songs that are very different then most rappers focus on. The Marshall Mathers LP can be seen as too graphic for some but he definitely isn't the most over the top rapper I've heard.
