West Coast Classics

No surprises with this one. There are a few big things that come out of this album:

1. Dre's first solo album
2. Snoop is now on the scene
3 G-funk

This is easily a true classic. A party album with singles that everyone loves. Dre's production is top notch, this is easily one of the best showcases of Dre in his prime; you can tell he is a man on a mission. I don't think Dre's rhymes are as memorable as Snoop Dogg's, but is that really such a bad thing? Snoop Dogg's one of a kind flow and fun rhymes definitely work great with Dre's production. This is one album that really tipped the scales to the west coast with its release. If you are a fan of hip hop this is a must for your collection.

Now I just had to pick something that had Del the Funky Homosapien involved. This is one record that is really overlooked and a lot of people haven't heard of it or Souls of Mischief. Well ask yourself this, have you heard of Heiroglyphics? Probably not and thats because they are members of the Oakland underground scene. This is a true gem and there is no doubt anyone interested in Hip-hop will appreciate this. The styles of the rappers are all different but smooth, clever and to the point. They are young on this album but that adds a certain level of energy. The production can only be described as cool. This is something that is different, but very accessible. It can be seen as heavily jazz influenced on some tracks but with an edge that is undeniably rap.

If you really are curious about this album don't hesitate to check out the title track '93 Til Infinity. This is one of my favorite rap songs of all time and I think it will be one of yours too.

Double Entry

The 2 Live Crew Is What We Are

Two Live Crew- Move Somethin'

The original dirty south! The original mega bass band. The original hip hop chant band. The first to use profanity all the time. At the time, by far the most vulgar rock'n'roll band to be as popular as they were. Perhaps I'm forever stuck in arrested development, but to this day I can recite the lyrics to I don't know how many of their songs from start to finish, even without the record playing. We Want Some Pussy is among the greatest rock'n'roll anthems of all time. This stuff undoubtably paved the way for hip hop to be the most no-holds-barred sub-genre of rock'n'roll ever to invade suburbia. What would rap be without the word 'fuck'? Thanks to these guys we'll never have to know. There's one track on Move Somethin' that I want to call special attention to. That is P-A-N (Puss-Ass-Nigga). As far as I can tell this song has not been re-released and as Move Somethin' is out-of-print I nominate this as the best unavailable song out there. How many three word song titles can you think of where all three of the words are vulgar slangs? More than just a celebration of vulgarity, however, the mixes on these records are catchy and brilliant. The DJ work is sharp and the beats are more contagious than the STD's these guys must be carrying. Just all in all great rock'n'roll no matter how you slice it!

Is that a jab at 2 Live? If you think those guys belong on this list write it up and justify it. If you're just being sarcastic then that speaks for itself.

4sho about the Chronic. All Praise is Due. I've mentioned on these boards before but a guy called Skrubastian made a fantastic screwed-down remix that I bought off ebay. The only mentions that I can find on it through google are from my own earlier posts on RM so it must be very obscure. I'm glad I have a copy.

Well, to me, both of those guys are pretty much one-hit-wonders. Especially, if you consider Wild Thing and Funky Cold Medina the same song. I definitely get a kick out of both those songs but it never inspired me to dig deeper so I don't really know about Tone-Loc, to be honest. And Baby Got Back is probably the world's finest anthem to buttocks. I can rap along with it, too.

Two Live Crew, why not As Nasty as they wanna be? I can see your reasoning in terms of time scales, but I think they go above and beyond on the third release.

I'd be curious to hear that screwed remix of the chronic and will keep an eye out next time I am somewhere I can pickup mixtapes.

Deltron3030 is excellent on a couple of levels. Souls of Mischief is equally as good and better I think, but different production and theme so it is kind of hard to compare. Heiroglyphics is good too (All the same people as Souls of Mischief or was it the other way around..), and again shows Del and his friends in a different light. His work with the Goriallz is good too and same with Handsome Boy Modeling School.

Yeah, maybe should have made it a triple entry.

Tone Loc might be a one (album) hit wonder, but Sir Mix-a-lot was commercially successful long before Baby Got Back. In fact, he was about the first rap artist with a platinum album in the US.

Fair enough then. When I think of Sir-Mix-a-Lot it's all about that one song but that's just my perception. After reading up on him a bit I see you're right. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I tend to ignore stuff that's not up my alley, sometimes.
