BTW, I read somewhere (Miles's autobiography?) that he did these drum war concerts with Elvin Jones (or was it Max Roach?) where it was just the two of them on stage with their drums kits no band or anything but I can't find any evidence. Did I just dream this?

PS Did you know Baker played with both Hawkwind for pil?

OldSmell, why is Ringo your favorite drummer? I've had many discussions with friends about this. He's a solid drummer, and by no means is he bad, but he doesn't exactly stand out for anything. Just about any drummer could play what he played. So do you love him just because of his simplicity?

i had a drummer friend in college who was also a big fan of ringo. he'd always say 'you couldn't take him off a backbeat with a backhoe' hehehe. it's not so much the simplicity but the steadiness.

Elvin Jones is my favorite drummer. Ringo is my favorite rock drummer. Why? There's no way that flamboyance is ever going to impress me more than good beats and to me Ringo just lays out the coolest beats. Day Tripper is a great example. This clip starts with Paul talking about LSD

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chqfe3lYdFw

Another great example of Ringo's talent is on Hey Jude. With any other drummer I'm sure the drums would just irritate me and come across as unnecessary filler but Ringo comes in with this really subtle, beautiful and actually very funky beat. With most any other drummer that song would have been just a mellow ballad. That whole 'nananana Hey Jude Jude Jude Judy Judy!!!!' only works so well because Ringo's beat if so massively full on brilliant.

A Day in the Life is actually quite similar. Ringo is largely responsible for making it so powerful but he's such a master you almost don't even notice it. He does nothing to distract you and everything to accentuate the positive!

Something is another one.

In all of these songs listen to his fillers and lead ins. Whew!

Go Zola Go!

Also, I've said it before and I'll say it again. Cozy Powell.. . . Rainbow Rising.

Terry Bozzio is another good one.

Tool is a very good adjective.

There are a couple stories I have about him, and sorry to do this on a 'drummer' thread. My Old Man used to be co-owner of a taxi company that serviced the area where I'm from in Newfoundland (now, remember, it's small, very small. The Net says that Clearly is from Carbonear, but he's not, he's from Riverhead-Harbour Grace, though he was probably born in Carbonear). Anyway, Cleary comes home from the Mainland (Newfoundlanders call anything not that's not the Island - excluding Labrador - 'The Mainland' or 'Upalong'), calls up the taxi company to take him from Victoria (my hometown) to Riverhead. It's a flat rate in those regions, no meter. Anyway, my Old Man goes and picks Cleary up at a bar and takes him home. The Skipper stops the cab where Cleary says to and says, "That's 8 dollars, young feller."
"8 dollars? Do you know who I am?" came the reply.
"Yes, yer Danny Cleary, the young hockey star."
"Yeah, that's right, and so my ride should be free."
"Listen here, hot shot, I don't care if yer Wayne Gretzky, you own me 8 dollars."
Cleary paid and stormed out of the car.
Have another cool story, but save it for a PM.
