Classical: What influences the non-avant-garde?

Recently, I have been listening to Dvorak and Holst and it's very obvious how much these composers influence John Williams and Howard Shore.

I was wondering if someone (Moe?) could help me draw a line from major works in the past to major comtemporary film scores, while avoiding the avant-garde.
