Ali Farka Touré

I just discovered that the great Ali Farka Touré died last March. I never knew. Although Satch mentioned it in his recent "Those No Longer With Us Thread" noting deaths in 2006 (which I never really went through until just now when I found out Mr Touré was dead).

I'm sad for the fact that he's gone, I love his music, and also that I didn't discover this at the time. I'm dumbfounded.

Be well, Mr Touré.

Yeah, not exactly what I expected to find opening this thread, that's for sure.

Back on topic, I was not familiar with Ali Farka Toure, but I have heard a little bit and I am going to check out more. Go figure he would have to pass for this

I would have started a thread for him and the others on the list, but it bugs me that it usually ends up being only you, Roivas, Jazzfromhell and myself who even bother with them.

To keep the spirit of this thread going, does anybody dig other kinds of African music/musicians? I find isicathamiya and mbube music fascinating.

I remember, Jazz, that you mentioned a long time ago that you saw a Salif Keita show. Gotta love the griot.

I actually got invited to the Salif Keita show, so had no idea who I was seeing, and still don't know that much about him. When it comes to Africa, I'm a big fan of Fela Kuti, although I only have one CD. One of these days, the number'll go up.

I really love the Nonesuch Explorer Series. Specifically

Kenya & Tanzania: Witchcraft & Ritual Music

West Africa; Drum Chant and Instrumental

Some names of specific musicians I dig are D'Gary, Cesaria Evora, Fela Kuti, Franco, Master Musicians of Jajouka and Jali Musa Jawara.

I used this list to remember my mind on the subject

http://africanmusic.org/alpha.html

And one album I swear is so cool is Juju Roots 1930's - 1950's. And of course King Sunny Ade.
