You can't go wrong with anything on there. However, without knowing your tastes in music currently, Kind of Blue by Miles Davis is usually a safe recommendation.

You're welcome. Oh yeah, you can call me Satchmo or Satch. Satchmo was the nickname for Louis Armstrong. Who not only was the most influential Jazz musician, but he was the most influential musician in non- Classical Modern music.
On Kind of Blue, you will find 3 of the most popular Jazz musicians in the genre of Jazz.
Miles Davis - trumpet
John Coltrane - tenor sax
Bill Evans - piano
Besides each of them being considered one of the best or best on their instrument, they're each some of of the most influental. Their influence also spreads out to other genres. For example, Rock.
The others involved on Kind of Blue are not bums, by the way.

If you're looking for a good jazz sampler and you start using Google you're likely to run into the Ken Burns' collections. You could do worse, but if you want to develop a serious appreciation you're much better off going to The Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz, Vol. 1-5 [BOX SET]. You'll have to pick it up used since it's out of print as a collection, but it's a damn good overview.

I personally wouldn't bother with too many if any compliations. They end up being a waste of money. If you don't like those on the list I gave you then Jazz might not be for you.
P.S. If you get around to watching Ken Burns' abomination of a documentary called Jazz....take everything you hear with several tons of salt around, especially if you hear it being said by Wynton Marsals, Stanley Crouch, and Albert Murray. You might also want to wear a pair of thigh-high galoshes just to be safe whenever they're speaking.
However, pretty much any documentary that Burns' name is attached to is usually worthless.
P.P.S. Since I just noticed you're interested in Jazz guitar playing, I give you three names to remember.
Django Reinhardt
Charlie Christian
Wes Montgomery
The three most influential guitar players.

Sure, if you end up a huge jazz aficionado and end up buying everything anyway, but for a casual fan or a curious newby like the op then they can be the most reasonable option. Especially, a really good one like the Smithsonian's.

I've never bought a compilation. Even when I was a newbie.
If you're worried about funds try a public library.
