yeah i'm thinking if the grooves from 'chameleon' or 'watermelon man' don't get you then it doesn't really matter what jazz you listen to it's not going to grab hold. then again i'm not really the most typical listener.

Without knowning which Miles you listened to, but taking into account your taste in music....if there is any Miles you will like, it's probably

A Tribute to Jack Johnson - The story behind the recording of the first of the two tracks is pretty funny.
Bitches Brew

Maybe even a few from his Second Quintet.

For Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers.....

For Coltrane anyone of these....

Interstellar Space
Complete 1961 Village Vanguard Recordings
Coltrane's Sound
Giant Steps
(you might want to start out with this one.)

A few others:

Thelonious Monk - Brilliant Corners
Sonny "Newk" Rollins
- a Night at the Village Vanguard
Sonny "Newk" Rollins
- Saxophone Colossus
Oliver Nelson
- The Blues and the Abstract Truth
Eric Dolphy
- Out to Lunch
Ornette Coleman
- The Shape of Jazz to Come

P.S. Did you ever get around to listening to Grasshoppa Seba's recommendations?

It's a great recording, and one of the few non-Miles Fusion recordings that are worth having.

I guess the others would be Mahavishnu (The Inner Mounting Flame) and a few Weather Report albums?

I'm checking out Naked City and Duke Ellington now.

For the record the Miles I've heard are Kind of Blue and Sketches of Spain.

Great recordings, but not two that I would have recommended as a starting point for someone with your general taste in music.

Which recording by Duke?
