I too liked that album but never bothered to check out Mort as it was getting a lot of negative reviews.

Certainly not The Life Pursuit, one of the big disappointments of the year. Two, perhaps three if I'm being benevolent nice songs, the rest dire seventies pastiches. See in the same range Calexico'sGarden Ruin and Cat Power's The Greatest (the title track is great though).
Possible choices:
Tom Waits, Orphans
Stijn, The World Is Happy Now
Hellwood, Chainsaw of Life
Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan, Ballad of the Broken Seas
Alias & Tarsier, Brookland/Oaklyn
Arab Strap, Ten Years of Tears
Wixel, Heart
Mogwai, Mr. Beast
Sparklehorse, Dreamt for Light Years in the Belly of a Mountain
Fat Jon & Styrofoam, The Same Channel
Helios, Eingya
and Gjallarhorn's "Kokkovirsi" is a splendid song (wicked rhythm!), but the album Rimfaxe is again not up to the standard they set with Sjofn. guess I should check out that Hoven Droven record, eh Zephyr? (didn't know you were back, btw)
But all in all, I have gotten more enjoyment out of discovering older stuff than out of anything released this year.

Some of my favorites:
TV on the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain
Destroyer - Destroyer's Rubies
Liars - Drums Not Dead
Sunset Rubdown - Shut Up I Am Dreaming
Girl Talk - Night Ripper
Nathan Fake - Drowning in a Sea of Love
Matmos - The Rose Has Teeth In The Mout
Clipse - Hell Hath No Fury
Ghostface Killah - Fishscale
Thom Yorke - The Eraser
It wasn't a horrible year but it wasn't great. I thought alot of my more anticipated releases were dissapointing. Next year looks very promising...

Eclipse by Amorphis. One of the best if not the best album of 2006.
