if i ever sing along to anything at work it'll be the last 42 seconds of april 11th by fantomas. hehehehe (which might get me the night off work since most people would think i was having a seizure hehe)
can't say i'm familiar with 'thugs' but if it's got a video that would personally offend me then i probably don't want to hear the tune hehe

The people that pick for the Jazz categories are not as bad as the main ones. They did nominate Brothaman's man in the last two years. Although, it's usually not anything out there. I am surprised Pat Metheny hasn't been given the usual nomination.

Just make sure it's not Prodigy's Smack My Bitch Up.

Satch! Don't desert me like that!
I was just listening to The Shape of Jazz to Come, in honour of Ahmet and in memory of Nesuhi.

'Thugs' by The Hip, from Day for Night. The video shows a plot to commit a crime. It also shows a burning Bible, some violence, brief shots of blood, yadda yadda. It was featured on Too Much For Much, and was banned for anything other than primetime airplay. I remember watching that episode of TMFM and thinking how ridiculous the situation was - I just loved the tune, and still do. All in all, the video is actually pretty tame and the banning caused a lot of backlash from fans and freedom of expression people/groups.
I was just relating the banning of 'Thugs' to the Jennifer Aniston/Brad Pitt crap your coworkers were on about, and suggesting that you make a similar complaint about something equally as foolish, but worth talking about and within the music world, something they wouldn't know anything about. Unfortunately, I failed to relay the parallel and now I look silly...
Anyway, the video:

So does Ornette Coleman actually bother with attending the Grammys?

The only way I see it happening is if they let him perform, and I don't see that happening. Afterall, they don't even show those awards being awarded on TV,

now i remember that video. 'day for night' is around the time i started losing interest in the hip but it's a lot better than the other 'thugs' tunes listed on allmusic hehe
i see what you're getting at now, i don't remember the video being banned though. or maybe it's just that muchmusic would use the clip from the band in the field as part of their promos. there's no way anyone who was offended by pitt/aniston would understand the implications of a banned music video from 12 years ago though.
i still think the strongest music video i've seen is pearl jam's jeremy. i suppose to disclaimer they'd air prior to showing it is the main reason it didn't get banned.
