gibson SG style

so a friend of mine is looking to get an SG, he's a lefty but figures a right handed model should work just the same. does anyone have any experience with that particular model or recommendations for something similar? i know i was looking at low end les pauls until smorgdonkey pointed me towards that ESP this spring.

I love my SG. It's a solid rock and roll guitar. The necks are not designed for speed. But the Gibson growl cannot be denied. It's lighter than the Les Paul. I've got the SG Special so it's not the heavy-duty version. Still ran 'bout $850, due to a flip-flop paint job. I think the other versions of this model ran a little cheaper. I've never really played any of the other SG models, so I can't say.

that's cool, the strap hooks up right behind where the neck meets the body right? or is it offset to one of the sides? i'm just wondering what sort of modifications, if any, would need to be done to flip a righty over.

As for guitars that would easily operate both ways I think this model would be pretty good. You are correct on where the strap hooks are. The only problem I see is that the input jack and knobs might get in the way of the strumming hand. I'll try it out when I get home.

my friend tends to play really low so i'm thinking it might actually be beneficial to have the knobs up above where he strums. you ever hear of any other manufacturer making an SG style guitar besides gibson, epiphone, or guild? nevermind that guild started re-issuing their guitar and added an extra 0 to their prices once kim thayil got big in soundgarden hehe.

Stagg - G490, R500-AM, G300-TCH
Vintage - VHE100, VR100, VR4000, VS6
Ibanez - GAX30
Cougar - SGE

If you want a double neck...

Tanglewood XG

Not that I am saying that I would recommend them. As everyone knows, Satchmo is Old School. Just answering the question is Satchmo.

i might get one of those to go along with my ultra dirt cheap 'capri' LP styled knock off. it's most definitely a plywood jobbie . actually i think he could probably get lucky on ebay for a real deal gibson if he saves up until after christmas.

Oh yeah, Tanglewood has a SG clone....Tanglewood TSE-605. There is also a left-handed version of it.

If you're looking for cheap, those will work. If you're actually going to spend your money on one....go with the Vintages, Ibanez, or Tanglewood.

As per usual, if you go to a Guitar store to check any of them out....please no Freebird and/or Stairway to Heaven.

Now this is important....If you must break off with either or both of those....you're not to mention that you "know" Satchmo!

actually my song of choice if i 'have' to test out an instrument in the store is the A chord. it's not an audition, i'm not trying to impress the failed rockstars working the counter. hehehe

Don't forget the ESP or ESP/LTD Viper...EXCELLENT quality with a bit of a twist...one MAJOR improvement in my opinion is that they don't have a 'straight in' surface input...it is one that is in the 'edge' of the guitar.
Small detail maybe but looks WAY better and doesn't require a special cable like the surface ones do (ish).
