Green Day, Punk or Not
Green Day recieved a huge backlash by their community when they hit it big.
Personally, I find this to be disturbing.
They just did what they always did and found a way to make money doing it. Seems very punk to me. Now they are political activists getting the punk message out to the masses.
I don't think you'r a sell out if you still do what you would have done otherwise, just for a larger audience.
I am curious to know others opinions on this topic. Do y'all think Green Day is Punk?

Yeah they have done what they always did, which wasn't and isn't Punk.
Who cares if they make money, however, it's still not Punk. It also isn't any good.
P.S. Just why is it that these boring "What or isn't Punk" and "State of Music" threads always pop up at the same time?

So did Linkin Park. That doesn't make them disco.

Now that we have the "State of Music" and "What is or isn't Punk" threads; we're only missing the Linkin Park vs. Beatles variation thread.

I don't see how Green Day could not be punk.

You might call them pop punk or whatever but they're definitely a part of the punk movement and a punk band at heart. They were originally on Larry Livermore's Lookout! Records which undeniably qualifies them as a legit punk band. Larry Livermore was one of the premier columnists of MaximumRock'n'Roll, which was one of the defining punk rock publications (along with Flipside) of the eighties. Green Day is a decent band with good catchy songs and a lot of spirit. No shame at all in being a fan.

I don't think of them as being a punk band. If anyone wants to classify them as such, well great for them, I couldn't give a rats arse. Maybe when they first started on Lookout! they might have been part of the punk movement but that was a long time ago.
I can't listen to that "time of your life" song (or whatever it is called) without feeling fucking annoyed.
