One chick eh? I base entire demographics on a single meeting with a single person too!
I've been to two Fugazi shows, and I can tell you first hand that the crowd that they attract are actually far more discerning and intelligent than the Hot Topic pseudo-punks that line up around the mall entrance for Green Day tickets. Now I am sure there was at least one girl at one or the other show with a Fugazi pin that had never heard Minor Threat, as I am sure there is at least one Green Day fan that has heard Verbal Abuse.

so you must know then that the guitar riff in the Green Day song Holiday is VERY similar to the guitar riff in Good Guys (Don't Wear White) by Minor Threat
that's not the only reason I dislike Green Day

I've never heard the Green Day song 'Holiday' but I can't think of a better band to steal guitar riffs from than Minor Threat.

Does anybody remember that song that had the exact same bassline as Waiting Room?

I believe that regardless of how you classify Green Day (punk, pop, rock, whatever), they should not have lost any respect for "making it" in the industry.
So, I suppose my question is referring to the argument of weather or not becoming popular changes anything.
I was just curious how other poeple classified Green Day and what they think about them and their past.
Personally I do consider Green Day a type of punk music, however it is certainly nothing like the original punk movement or "hardcore".
Generas evolve, otherwise it would be rather boring hearing the same thing over and over.
Green Day has also evolved, they have mellowed out and adopted a poppier sound; you can love it or hate it, but that's just the way it is.

Yes, genres evolve, and I don`t think making punk just like the old days constitutes more respect than what Green Day did (in fact the opposite). I say did, because Green Day was fresh and new one day, but I don`t think they have evolved musically since then, just more bland.

i don't think i've ever met more uptight and anal retentive music 'fans' than those who go on and on and on about 'punk'.
seriously, if you're all about the ideal and attitude how fucking different is it than the attitude those free jazz guys had in the early 60s? or the avant garde composers who went against traditional compositional theory. or any other sort of experimental artist. it's about pushing the envelope. the only difference with punk where they pushed rock's envelope is that people still hold onto that motherfucking dinosaur like it really fucking matters because only music made with a fucking guitar counts for shit in this day and age. seriously look at how fucking subdivided some of the asshat punk rock 'fans' want to split the genre. it's like more than 3 bands can't be under the same fucking classification because some fucking twit you met on the street with nice tits is a little less informed about one of them than your fucking buddy who never leaves the fucking box he lives in.
as far as the losing respect when making it in the industry thing. bullshit. it's like seerix said a long time ago when i pulled the same example using nickelback. rock is about youth rebellion. it always has and always will. to hear 'wake me up when septemeber ends' or 'time of your life' does not make ANYONE think 'punk rock' anything. no fucking 'pseudo pop punk' no fucking 'punk pop' not fucking 'alterna pop punk'. JUST MOTHERFUCKING SHIT. plain and simple. they got huge for releasing a bland ass G C D piece of shit. you want to call that punk rock and pretend like it matters because none of your friends disagree well whatever.
what the fuck does it matter what fucking genre it's in? IT'S A FUCKING MARKETING TERM!!!!! get your fucking heads out of your goddamned asses. seriously. i'm pretty sure it was duke ellington that said there are only two types of music out there, good and bad. that's it. if you don't have the fucking capacity to make that decision on your fucking own then you probably don't deserve to be exposed to the really good shit. if you need a fucking talking head in a box to tell you it's good you don't deserve it. if you need to make sure it's cool with your friends to listen to it you don't fucking deserve it.
