The least you could do is answer the question and vote in the poll.

http://www.radiomute.com/26481-birth...ad-seeds.html?

I only just noticed this.

Well, it depends I guess, but if your first listen (or first few listens) to an album is (are) so unrewarding, is it really worth pursuing then? The same with literature really. There is so much music, so many books out there, why waste time on something it seems you're not going to like anyway?

And yes I like Birthday Party (well Prayers on Fire mostly, Junk Yard is rather disappointing) and some Nick Cave solo stuff, but lately he's lost me. He's going in a different direction, more soulwards, less dark ehrm stuff. He goes to his office nowadays, in a clean suit, and writes songs from nine to five. His demons have mostly left the building. I.e. he's gotten a bit boring, in my opinion.

1. The problem with this is many peoples (especially those around your age, or younger) tastes are evolving and changing. What you may like today, you might hate tomorrow and vise versa.

I know people who were absurd enough to hate James Joyce 15-years ago, and not only are down with DA MAN....but have been to 4 Bloomsdays, since.

The same with music, film, art....and many other things.

2. He hasn't posted in a bit....lurker is his M.O. these days.

Well, yes, specially in avant-garde music which can be a little more complex music for your brain. As for an example I had to give a listen to the Trout Mask Replica about 15 times before I was really into the album, and every time a give a new listen I find something new.
There are other albums wich maybe with one or two times I know I like it or don't, the reason can be that the music is more easy digestible.
In literature it is the same, sometimes I have headaches to undestand what Kant is trying to say, but I just love when I just get the message.
I do prefer the more chalenging things.

I sometimes find that I need to listen to an album a few times before starting to enjoy it. I didn't like a lot of stuff the first time through but them came to really appreciate it.

Old Smell you should post more!

oh I don't doubt things can change. and that some things need some more effort, but I don't think Cave was a good example for that... as it's not something too outside my normal listening habits... it happens not that much, I think, that I grow to like an album I really hated at first though. usually I hear at least some things or sparks that I like...

Yes, I always try to get an appreciation for music I sometimes start off disliking. Never liked the Doors and took me about 20 years to appreciate them. Same thing with Queen. Heck, I am learning there's something in just about every genre of music I am liking in my old age.

Still trying to appreciate the Beach Boys but that one just escapes me. I just don't get it and I honestly think it's the high pitched whine (to me it's a whine). Don't like the Four Seasons either. Nails on a chalk board for me.

But, from time to time I will allow my fellow music fanatics who like them to try and learn to appreciate them. Nothin' so far.
