Rock and Roll HOF, 2007 Edition

It's that time of year, once again. For those interested....here is this year's list of inductees. 500 mostly clueless wonders will be picking 5 new memebers for the Oxymoronic Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Discuss amongst yourself.

Van Halen
The Stooges
Patti Smith
R.E.M.
Dave Clark Five
Chic
Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five
Joe Tex
Ronettes

P.S. Just when you thought the soap opera that is Van Halen couldn't get any funnier....Apparently Eddie's 15-year-old son Wolfgang (as in Amadeus **) is now the bass player for Van Halen.

* For the Philistines amongst you that might not have heard of some or all of those bands/musicians.

** For the Philistines aka Mozart.

Van Halen, The Stooges, Patti Smith, and Grandmaster Flash all belong in there, for sure. Considering the Stooges have been eligible for over fifteen years...about time, to say the least. REM, to a lesser extent, also belong. Chic...ugh. As much as I love Be My Baby (the opening montage of Mean Streets is one of my favorite movie scenes ever), it seems like one major, lasting hit (that I know of) and strong ties to Phil Spector aren't really enough to deserve hall of fame status. Don't know the Dave Clark Five and Joe Tex, that website makes them sound fairly important, so whatever.

I don't really understand why a Rock y Roll HOF is necessary.

Possibly a desperate attempt to impart some legitimacy to an art form considered somewhat suspect.

I've been to Cleveland several times since this monstrosity was established. Couldn't bring myself to part with the $20 it took to go in and gawk at photos of Janis Joplin. I mean...$20. That's almost two Mingus CDs right there. Or a couple really nice Belgian Ales.

Seems like the Special Olympics of music to me.

Oh, snap!

So, what would've happened if I hadn't thrown DA MAN into the mix?

Anyway, never hurts to cover your bases. JIC.

Just to add some more punchline to Satchmo's VH joke:

Van Halen Exclusive: Summer Tour A Go!
Posted by frankmeyer - Monday, November 06, 2006 4:46 PM

Last week, TheFeed ran a story about how Eddie Van Halen's spokesperson Janie Liszewski told TMZ.com that his son Wolfgang was officially the new bassist in Van Halen. Well, now TheFeed can confirm he's in the band via our own correspondence with Liszewski, as well as the fact that there will be a summer 2007 tour!

"Yes, I can confirm this story in the respect of Wolfgang being the new bass player for the band and yes he has been in the studio with his dad and uncle rehearsing and writing for an upcoming summer 2007 tour," Liszewski exclusively told TheFeed. "Wolfgang most certainly has inherited the Van Halen musical genius gene. At 15 years of age his knowledge, understanding, skill, and command of multiple instruments is impressive."

When asked about the rumor that the Van Halen boys will enlist original VH singer David Lee Roth for this tour, Liszewski said, "There has been no confirmation that David Lee Roth will be touring this coming summer."

She also confirmed what Eddie announced on Howard Stern last month, that Michael Anthony is definitely no longer in Van Halen.

So let's recap: We know that Eddie and brother Alex are rehearsing with Wolfgang on bass. We know that there will be a tour this summer. We don't know who will sing for the band yet, but we know Eddie is open to working with Roth (he said so on Stern) and that no one is denying that Diamond Dave could be the frontman. Hmmmm...interesting.

The Rock Hall is actually one of the most modern well run museums I have ever been to...

As far as a "desperate attempt"... What? What need for desperation is there for the millions who feel rock is a wonderful art form... It is only a fairly new museum because the art form itself is relatively new...

As far as the selection process... Well, that is a ripe area for debate...

The only people who feel the art form of rock is somewhat suspect are elitists of other musical art forms... While most classical music and jazz require more concentrated listening than most rock, rock offers a much wider canvas of sound... And a whole bunch of rock offers very compelling involved listening... But heck, some of the best rock is just simple, loud, and raw (but oh so very moving)...

I'll take the bombastic electrified blues of Led Zeppelin any day over the assimilated brew of Bartok... Because for me Zeppelin's music has more emotion... And for complexity, give me ramblings of Robert Fripp above the over the top harmonies of Wagner... I'll also take the astonishing beats of Neal Pert over the pounding atonal piano of Cecil Taylor (or better example, the piano pounding of Jerry Lee Lewis over Cecil Taylor)... My actual point is not that there is anything inferior about Jazz or Classical music (both are wonderful forms of art with much to offer), just that if you dig under the promoted pop culture surface, you can find a lot of quality art and emotion in Rock n Roll...

Great music can be found in many places within many genre...
