Starless & Bible Black + the New Hawks + Goldmundo - Sat 4th November, Yorkshire House, Parliament Street, Lancaster, £2.50, 8.30pm-1am.
S & BB have just released their debut album on Chicago's excellent Locust label - here's some comments so far:
This Manchester-based group is responsible for one of the year’s best folkie songs. It’s called “Everyday and Everynight, and it is built around the calm voice of Hélène Gautier, who begins by murmuring, “You and I will touch the sky/ Everyday and everynight. A guitar and a banjo and a man (Peter Philipson, the band’s other leader) join in; as a synthesizer moans, a rock riff emerges, and the band ascends to a noisy peak before floating back down. " - Kelefa Sanneh, The New York Times
They may call Manchester home, but Starless And Bible Black are not your sister’s Madchester band. This trio’s debut album is filled with lyrical ballads that span an emotional rollercoaster; from sweet and charming daydreams to guttural expostulations, their words shift from weightless to crushing." - CMJ (Best New music)

The New Hawks are an immense and intense experience, as much performance poetry as music (but not shit!) They have a couple of tracks out on Timbreland Recordings' "Furthest Branches From the Trunk" compilation, out on 6th November, distributed by Forte. www.timbreland.co.uk
