The Doors were so far ahead of their time. I love them, too, and they're one of the few groups my 28 year old son and I can agree on.

The Doors were great... Some people have come down on them due to the overhype of Jim Morrison... Although, he sure was a person with an interesting amount of mystical charisma (whatever that means, lol)... The point is, he was an interesting lead focal point... And, as far as his talent, his voice was very unique... But, I never thought his lyrics were that much better or even as good as other greats of his era or since...
Overall, I feel the music the Doors created with Morrison was top notch... They would rank among my favorite 20 artists in the history of rock...

I think The Doors are overrated by casual music fans and underrated by serious music fans. They get dissed too much by people who compare them unfavorably to The MC5 or The Stooges. Whenever, I listen to The Doors I always feel like 'Man, I forgot how good these guys are.' Morrison was a great and very sincere frontman backed by an ultra-talented band. One article I think I read in Mojo really impressed me with how dedicated they were to their craft. In the early days, they rehearsed all the time kind of like The Strokes. As far as the lyrics, I'm no expert on poetry but I've always found The Doors very captivating lyrically.

I don't think most people believe the "official" story of how Morrison died, but I find it unlikely that the Paris police actually reopen the case since it's not a murder.

wouldn't this same line of sensationalism apply to jimi hendrix / john bonham / janis joplin?
the most telling part of that article to my eyes is this little bit...

nothing sells more books like advanced hype over a martyr for a generation of idealists who only want to remember the good bits.

The Doors for me have always been under the list of bands I should like but don't. I respect their musicianship and enjoy some of their material, but they are a "best of" band as far as my collection goes. I've always felt like I should enjoy them more, but I just don't feel it when I listen to their stuff.
I've never been able to pin down exactly what turns me off about them. They have so many things in the groovy column. Creepy organ, dark/gothic sound, cool lyrics, great song writing. . . There's just something missing for me.

the best way i can describe the doors is that i really like hearing them when other people are listening to them but i don't ever put their music on myself.
