Very diverse list, Satchmo. I'm glad to see that Mahler makes your top ten.

You can say pretty much that about my musical tastes in general. I am all over the place.

Dizzy Gillespie said " there is only good music and bad music." Charlie Parker "There is no boundary line to art." Duke Ellington "Soon it will all just be music."

philip glass, american minimalism to the finest. his soundtrack to the hours is phenomenal, just spooky violins and piano.

Philip Glass

Don't kill me, I don't have anything against Glass, that joke just cracks me up.

He lived in the northeast for a while (as a teacher and conductor), and I think he may have done some travelling in the midwest during his stay in the U.S. His "New World Symphony" does have some strong elements of deep Americana in it, which would lead me to believe that he had done some "field trips" to experience American folk musical culture firsthand.

Oh no, not at all. He would certainly make my top 20. I love his symphonies and ballets.
