Well, I agree that no one has any business covering Tom Waits (or at least, no one who's just going to go for an imitation of his style, if they're integrating his music with their own musical ideas, that's cool). He's also a pretty intimidating musical force to go after in one's first musical experience. This whole thing seems pretty fishy, but like the article said, at least it seems like Johansson is a bit deeper into music than Paris Hilton or Lindsay Lohan. It doesn't seem like she's just going through the standard "I'm famous, I can have any kind of career I want" motions, although it's entirely possible.

On a less uncertain note, Scarlett Johansson is extremely hot. Yes, I'm 16. 16, and loving it.

Y'know, your bringing up music videos reminds me, her covering his material is probably the only way any Waits-related video will ever make it onto MTV. Won't that be a sight, another case of 97% of the audience going "Who the **** is that guy?"

He's actually had videos played on MTV.

P.S. Don't think that Satchmo didn't notice you didn't even attempt to ask for a new translation.

Yeah, as if that would work.

Have any of his recent songs/albums made it on MTV? If he had videos on it 20 or even 10 years ago, that's one thing, but today would really surprise me.

Anything to bring Tom into the light is fine with me. More power to her. She will have to be creative with her song choice, but I also imagine that most of it will be from the early stuff. Although there are some choice tracks off the newer material she could try.

A peon informs me that July 23, 1999, would be the last time a Wait video was somehow snuck on.

It's not as if Tom Waits is a well kept seceret now, though. He's just never going to be popular with the masses, and it's because of this that nothing really good can come of this. Either: a) Scarlett Johansson's album is going be ignored, no harm done, or b) it's going to be popular and we're going to have to deal with Tom Waits covers in commercials and movies for the next however long.

Option b is what I'm afraid of.

I understand your apprehension, but we must go forth and spread the word. The word of the Waits. If via commercial, via movies (which he has already achieved success), or be it a cute actresses singing his praises. The word of Waits must be sent forth unto the world.
